“Yeah, but we’re not supposed to cut her up. You know the rules.”

A long puff of smoke drifted into the cold night. “Fuck his rules.”

The other man took a half-step back. “You…you aren’t serious. He pays us.”

“And he takes a whole lot more. Maybe—maybe we should be getting a bigger cut, you ever think of that?”

Midas eased closer. Were these two bozos the grunt workers? Someone else was pulling the strings?

“I think…” A shaking hand ran through the redhead’s hair. “I think he scares me. You don’t know what he can do.”

Another exhale of smoke. “So he killed a woman, so—”

Snap.

Fuck. Midas glanced down. Had he really just made that amateur-level mistake? Yep, he had. The snow had covered an old twig, and he’d snapped it when he inched forward. But maybe these two jerks would just think an animal had made that sound.

The one smoking whipped toward Midas’s location. “Someone’s here,” he said instantly.

The other guy laughed. “No way, man! We are in the middle of the woods. You just heard an animal. Maybe a rabbit. A raccoon.” He shuddered. “It’s cold as fuck out here. Let’s go back inside.”

“She can hear us inside. You wouldn’t let me knock her out.”

Midas’s hands fisted.

The smoking man took a step toward Midas. His gaze seemed to push through the dark and the trees and lock on Midas. Just seems to. I don’t think the SOB really sees me. Yet.

“How many times do I have to tell you?” A sigh. “We are not supposed to hurt her. You know he likes them undamaged. You shouldn’t have hit her back at her house.”

He’d hit Alina?

“Bitch was almost outside. Running to that freaky-ass stalker boyfriend in his car. Couldn’t let her reach him.”

You are going to suffer.

“You like this too much. You liked scaring her at the rink. Then messing with her car—”

“Stop your freaking preaching at me.” The man tossed down his cigarette. “I’m going to check the woods.”

“Fine. Go freeze your ass off. I’m heading back inside until the boss arrives. Shouldn’t be too long now.”

The boss was coming? Would he be bringing others? Right now, the odds were two against one, and Midas damn well liked those odds. But if more people came, then he’d be dealing with an even more unstable situation. Better to take control now.

The other guy had already run up the steps. Disappeared into the cabin. But the one who’d hit Alina was still there. Edging closer. Far too cautious.

The man clearly needed a bit of bait so that he’d come running. Deliberately, Midas pressed down on the twig beneath his shoe. Snap. That had the bastard springing into motion. He came running for Midas and the prick yanked out a knife as he headed into the woods.

And straight at Midas.

Chapter Five

The cabin’s front door shut. A blast of cold air slid underneath the closet door. Alina shuddered. The two men had gone out moments before. But now, someone had returned.

She’d hoped they’d get in their car and drive away. If they left, she might have a chance to escape. Her wrists were raw and bloody because she’d been straining against the zip ties. So far, they hadn’t broken, but she wasn’t giving up.

She couldn’t give up.

The floorboards squeaked with her abductor’s footsteps. Closer and closer. The squeaks and creaks grew louder because he was closing in on her. Just one man. She only heard one set of steps. The other man must still be outside.
