“Did you eliminate them?” Low.

So low that maybe she’d misunderstood. Because surely her father hadn’t just asked if Midas had killed the men who took her?

Midas broke from her father’s grip and stalked toward Alina. He’d only been a few steps away, but he came touching-close. His amber eyes narrowed on her face. “We really need to talk.”

The cops wanted to talk.

Her father wanted to talk.

Now Midas.

She nodded.

“I need to know what the situation is,” her father trailed after Midas. “I have to get my lawyers on this, ASAP. Though, dammit, I told you I didn’t want the cops involved. You should have listened to me. It would have made everything so much simpler. I could have made the problem vanish.”

Her heart drummed hard in her chest. What was happening?

Midas stood right in front of her. “You need to take some deep breaths.”

She released the breath she’d been holding. When had she even started holding her breath?

“You’re safe, Alina. I am going to stay with you until the bastards are locked in cells.”

“They’re still alive?” Her father gasped. “But I told you—”

A knock sounded at the door. A woman with blond hair—twisted in a loose bun—popped her head inside. “Alina Bellamy?”

Alina nodded.

“I’m Detective Joyce Meriam.” She pushed the door open fully. A tall, dark, broad-shouldered male stood behind her. His intense gaze took in the scene. “And this is my partner, Detective Calvin Booker.”

Calvin dipped his head forward. His brown eyes swept over Alina and Midas.

“We’ve been assigned to your case,” Joyce continued in her slightly friendly tone, “and we have quite a few questions.”

Alina’s lips parted.

“My daughter has been through a grueling ordeal,” her father snapped as he moved into the path of the two detectives. “She is still being examined by doctors. This is not the time to question her. Shouldn’t you be out there, hunting down the men who took her?”

“Oh, we think we have those men,” Joyce said. Her lips pursed even as she sidestepped so that she could continue to study Alina and Midas. “Don’t you worry about them. They aren’t going to be hurting anyone else.” Her bright blue gaze dipped to Midas. “Midas Monroe. I am very familiar with you.”

Why would the detective be familiar with Midas? Alina’s head ached, but then, it had been aching ever since she’d slammed into the door.

At the detective’s words, Midas turned to partially face the detectives.

“You told the responding officers that you had secured two individuals who abducted Alina.” Joyce strolled closer to him. “I believe you indicated that you had used zip ties you found in the rear of their vehicle in order to bind them.”

“Yes.” A flat response. “Though I wasn’t sure if the men would still be at the cabin when the officers arrived.”

“Oh, they were there,” Calvin assured him. “Exactly where you told the uniforms. The redhead was inside the cabin. The other guy was in the woods, just past the tree line on the north side.”

Alina exhaled in relief. “Then they can tell you about their boss.”

All eyes locked on her.

She wet her lips. “They weren’t supposed to hurt me.” Her hand rose to skim over her jaw. “Not too much, anyway. Because of the boss. They were waiting for him. He was on his way there.” Her gaze slid to Midas. “But Midas got to me first. He took me out of there. Carried me through the woods and got me to safety.” Her hand reached out and curled over his. “He saved my life.”

“Uh, huh. Saved you…” Joyce edged closer. “And he killed the two men who’d taken you?”
