Alina’s jaw dropped. It took her a moment to snap it closed and gasp, “What?” The detectives were wrong. Her head shook. “No, no, Midas didn’t kill anyone!”

“Don’t say another word until my lawyers are here,” her father blasted. “Not you, Alina. Not you, Midas.” He pointed at the cops. “My daughter is a victim. Her bodyguard is the hero. He saved her life. Your questions will wait. I will—”

Her father said more. He was in full command mode, but Alina didn’t hear him. She’d gotten stuck on one word.

Bodyguard.

Her father was wrong. Or maybe she’d heard wrong. Midas wasn’t her bodyguard. Maybe her father had meant to say boyfriend.

But…

We went on one date. My father wouldn’t know about that date. She certainly hadn’t told him about it.

The ache in her head grew worse.

Her hand began to pull away from Midas’s.

His hand flipped over. Caught hers. Held tightly. “Alina.”

Her gaze had fallen to their hands. Now it snapped back up to his face.

“Alina, I will explain everything to you,” he swore. His amber eyes glittered. “I need you to trust me.”

Joyce cleared her throat. “If she was taken under your watch, bodyguard, then you seemed to have been falling down on the job.”

That word again. Bodyguard. “He’s head of security at the rink,” Alina blurted. Head of security didn’t mean he was her personal bodyguard. “He didn’t fall down on any job. I was at home. Sleeping.” She’d told the other cops this information before—about what had happened when she was taken, but she’d tell it again. Clearly, there was some confusion. “I heard my bedroom door opening. I knew someone was in the house, and I woke up. They came at me, and I-I tried to fight.” For a moment, the terror of that moment swamped her.

Her father darted back to her side. He pulled her hand from Midas’s grasp. “Alina.”

Her head turned toward him.

“Wait for the lawyer,” he urged her.

But she wasn’t saying anything wrong. “I grabbed the lamp. I fought. They were stronger.” The words wanted to come out. She didn’t try to stop them. I am not saying anything wrong. “I tried to run to the front door.” They’d…they’d said something. Her brow furrowed. She glanced over at a still Midas. “They said someone was watching the house.”

“I was,” Midas told her. “I was on the street. I saw a light in your bedroom flash on, then turn off. Didn’t seem right, so I went to your front door. When I knocked, you didn’t answer.”

Her father cursed.

Calvin raised one eyebrow. “Uniforms are at her place now. Seems her front door was broken open.”

“Sure.” An easy reply from Midas. “I kicked it in. I needed to get inside to her. When I got in, I realized they’d taken her out the back. I hunted for her. It was damn dark. I turned just as their car was coming right at me.”

Her eyes squeezed closed. “They hit Midas.” Thank goodness they hadn’t killed him. Her heart seemed to jerk in her chest.

“A car hit you?” Joyce clarified with a slight clearing of her throat. “Like, it almost hit you or it actually hit—”

“I jumped on the hood,” Midas informed her flatly. “Held on long enough to put a tracker on the vehicle. Hid it underneath the upper section of the hood, right near the windshield. The driver hit the brakes, I went flying, and they thought they left me behind.” A pause. “They were wrong. I gave chase. Subdued the two men. Got her out of the cabin because their reinforcements were coming.”

Alina saw the two detectives share a long look.

“And you didn’t think to call the cops during this time?” A careful question from Joyce.

“Enough,” Ryker blasted. “I don’t like the tone. I don’t like the insinuations you seem to be making. The man was obviously busy saving my daughter.”

Alina wasn’t sure what the detective was insinuating. Maybe it was because of her concussion or the shock, but she felt like she was missing a whole lot.

Like…bodyguard? “Why were you outside my house?” Alina asked Midas. “Did you forget something?” Or maybe he’d been coming back to her. They’d shared that passionate kiss, and she’d wanted more. Perhaps he had, too.
