“Big girls don’t cry. Big girls don’t cry.”

He crouched in front of her, giving her a curious look. “Look at me.”

The command in his voice was hard to ignore. Isa glanced up at him.

“Big girls can cry.”

She sucked in a breath. “Be careful what you wish for.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Are your tears supposed to scare me?”

“Don’t tears scare most men?”

That was definitely amusement in his face. “Not me.”

She wasn’t sure if that was meant to sound threatening or not . . . like he intended to make her cry at some stage.

Yeah, she was just imagining things.

She did that.

“My dad didn’t like when I cried. He’d make me go to my room if I got upset.” She winced. “And I don’t know why I told you that.” She rubbed at her forehead.

“You sure you didn’t hit your head?” He studied her closely.

“I didn’t. It really did hurt before I got in the car.”

“Are those your work clothes?” he asked. That was a weird change of subject.

“Um, yeah.”

“I’ve never seen you wear stuff like that.”

“You don’t like it?” She grimaced. Why did she ask that? Like she cared what he thought.

“Not really.” He shrugged. “Doesn’t look like you.”

It wasn’t. But with how her boss kept leering at her, she’d decided that standing out might not be a good thing.

Fading into the background was now her aim.

“First-Aid kit?” he asked.

“Oh, um. I can get it.”

He sighed and shot her a look.

“Or you could, I guess. It’s in the bathroom cabinet. Third drawer down. The bathroom is?—”

“I’ll find it,” he told her, standing. “Stay there.”

She wasn’t sure where he thought she’d be going. She closed her eyes, but her heart started racing once more. All she could see were those headlights coming toward her.

Isa needed a glass of water. And she should offer him something. Where were her manners?

Standing, the world spun. She put her hand over her stomach as it lurched sickeningly.

“You’ve got problems following orders.” It was a statement rather than a question, as though it was something he already knew but still had to point out.
