“I can, and I’d love to chat about it, but the kids are sick and—”

“My grandchildren are sick? How did I not know this?”

“You’ve been busy with your travels, and I didn’t want to upset you over stomach issues.”

“That’s nonsense, Warner, and you know it. I’m never too busy for my grandchildren. In fact, I’m coming over.”

No, no, no. She can’t come. I haven’t told my parents about Kierra and Kiyah. I want them to meet them both, but maybe not when we’re elbow deep in puke and shit.

“No, don’t do that. It might be contagious.”

“Your father and I will be there in an hour.”

Oh, God, no….

“No—”

“Yes.”

“You’re imposing,” I warned. She laughed at my feeble attempt to dissuade their visit.

“Hmph. Sue me. We also must discuss that woman I told you to never marry.”

Fuck.

Eliza had been suspiciously quiet as of late. I had expected her to scorch the earth after she was discharged from the hospital, but all I’d been met with was radio silence. Her sister had a lot to say about me and Kierra, who she claimed “pulled strings” to get Eliza placed on hold. I blocked her number and had been waiting for the other shoe to drop. The kids were a welcome distraction.

“There’s nothing to discuss. I’m handling it.”

“Not according to my sources.”

I rolled my eyes. My mother’s sources were her gaggle of friends who spent their days gossiping, traveling, spending a fortune, and ogling the pool boys at the country club while making useless statements like, “If I were only twenty years younger.”

“I, for one, am grateful that she was institutionalized. It was a long time coming. She’s been running rampant through thestreets, sullying our name. Warner, that woman needs to drop our surname.”

“Yes, Mo—”

“Jon, do you have that list ready?” Kierra asked, entering the kitchen in those delectable leather pants. She had her helmet tucked under her arm and a leather jacket hooked over her shoulder.

“Who is that, Warner? Is that the nanny I’ve been hearing so much about?”

Kierra’s brows lifted as I attempted to turn the speaker off.

There’s no telling what my mother will say.

“I hope you’re not taking advantage of the poor woman.”

Kierra laughed behind her hand when my mouth opened and closed repeatedly.

“T-taking advantage?”

“Don’t play coy with me. I know how you men can be, and let’s be honest, you and Eliza have been kaput for alongwhile. I understand that urges can occur due to proximity, but—”

“I don’t appreciate you accusing me of taking advantage of my nanny. Kierra and I are in a committed relationship.”

Kierra snickered and snatched the grocery list off the refrigerator as my mother continued to portray me as some lecherous nanny predator. She kissed my cheek before taking off for the garage.

“Be safe!” I shouted before the front door slammed shut.
