“I think she knocked the wind out of herself, but she should be all right,” I diagnosed, peeling Daisy off the floor. I performed a quick examination and found that nothing was broken; she was breathing normally and asking for Nori after a minute.

I shook my head and reminded myself that children were a blessing.

“Grant?”

“Yes, sir?”

“I want you, Casey, and Daisy in my office after this show goes off.”

“Why? Are we in trouble?”

“No.”

“What about me, Mr. Jonathan?”

“I will have Grant come get you after I’m done talking to them because I need to talk to you, too.”

I know Kierra told me to leave it alone, but she’s hurting, and after a nearly fatal accident, it’s only natural to want to be with her child.

Chapter Forty-Five

Jonathan

I stared at my children and wondered if I should dismiss Daisy. I was sure most of what I was about to say would go over her head, but it would be wrong for me to exclude her.

“Dad…are you okay?” Grant asked.

A smile tugged at the corner of my lips. “Honestly?”

“Aren’t you supposed to always be honest?” he countered.

“That’s true, son. You always tell the truth. Honestly, I’m thankful that we—”

“You’re not supposed to say what you’re thankful for until tomorrow,” Casey reminded me.

“I think we can get an early start. I’m thankful we have the extra help from Ms. Kierra, your grandparents, Uncle Ant, and Ms. Simone. The last six months have been…challenging but rewarding. As the three of you may have already figured out, Ms. Kierra and I are romantically involved.”

They stared at me with blank faces.

Romantically involved? Really, Jon?

I cleared my throat before continuing. “Ms. Kierra and I love each other very much, and we are partners raising our children together.”

“Like you and Mommy?” Casey asked.

I’m not sure your mother was ever in love with me, but yeah, you get the gist.

“Yes, like me and Mommy.”

“Are you going to marry Ms. Kierra?” Grant asked with an uneasy tone. It sounded like disapproval as if someone had asked if you were sure you wanted to wear that particular ensemble.

“I would like to…one day,” I said cautiously, still gauging his reaction. “How does that make you all feel?”

“If you marry Ms. Kierra, then will she be our new mommy?” Casey asked.

“That would make her your stepmother.”

“If you marry Ms. Kierra, does that mean she and Kiyah will stay with us forever?” Grant inquired.
