“Yes.”

“I’m okay with that,” Grant replied.

“That would make Kiyah your sister.”

“How?” he asked, tilting his head. We have a different mom and dad.”

“Just like Ms. Kierra would become your new mom, Kiyah would become your new sister.”

Grant sat back against the chair, looking as dazed as could be.

“Daisy…what do you think?”

“I want to go play.”

“In a minute. I still need to talk to you all about something important. I know you all haven’t seen your mother in a while.”

“Since she hit the truck with the baseball bat,” Casey confirmed.

“Correct. Contact with your mother has been limited for a while. You haven’t spoken to her on the phone or seen her because she has been showing unsafe behavior—behavior that could potentially cause an unsafe situation. Your mother andI will be going to court in January to determine what your relationship with her looks like in the future. And right now, all I’m comfortable with is supervised visitation at the most if a judge orders it.”

“What does that mean?” Grant questioned.

“That means if you visit with her, another adult will be present to supervise your visit.”

“I don’t want to see her,” Casey admitted.

Grant lowered his head and began picking at the knee of his camouflage Carhartt pants. “Grant?”

“I still want to see her,” he mumbled, not meeting my eyes.

“There’s nothing wrong with that. Daisy?”

“I want to go play.”

“You are dismissed, Daisy. Please tell Kiyah I want to see her.”

I waited until she was gone to address the boys. “I’ll tell you two something I should’ve learned long ago. You can’t change a person…only yourself. If your mother doesn’t choose to change herself so she can be better for you three, then there will be consequences.”

“Consequences like what?” Grant asked suspiciously.

“We will get to that road when we cross it. Do you two have any other questions?”

Casey shook his head.

“Can I call Mom on the phone?” Grant requested.

I wanted to say no, but my eldest son was hurting for his mother, and it was a simple enough request.

“I will call your aunt and have her contact your mother. How does that sound?”

“That works.”

“Okay. We’ll give her a call after dinner.”

Soft knocking on the door caught my attention.

“Come in. You two are dismissed.”
