‘Can’t deal with one little human?’ I goad.

His eyes narrow. ‘Your turn,’ he repeats.

‘Fine,’ I say, throwing my hands up. ‘Put her in the other room, and I’ll be there in a minute.’

I follow Kal into the first chamber, which I find much better equipped than the places we’ve been staying at since we left Alcana. There’s even a bath behind the screen.

‘What’s the time?’ I ask Kal as he puts his bag down on the floor.

‘Late afternoon,’ he replies.

‘But it’s so dark,’ I say, glancing out through the glass window.

‘It’s always like that here.’ He makes a sound of disgust. ‘I hate the dark worlds, but the next Breach is in only a few hours.’

‘Good.’

I go into the other room to find the Harbinger standing in the middle of the floor, shivering.

‘Sit down,’ I tell her.

She eyes the wooden boards and shakes her head. ‘I’ll stand in the corner if you want me out of the way, but I can’t–’ She checks herself. ‘I don’t want to sit.’

I ignore her words, but as I walk past her to put my bag down, I get another tantalizing scent of her in the air, and my body immediately responds. I only just stop myself from throwing her on the bed as I turn quickly and walk back past her to the door.

I can’t stay alone with her for a whole night. I can’t.

I walk out and practically barge into the next room to find Dane lying on the bed.

‘I can’t do it. I can’t be alone with her.’

Dane heaves a sigh. ‘Is it that difficult not to kill her? Gods, tell her to lay on the fucking floor and go to sleep in the bed. Simple.’

‘So simple that you can’t be in the same room with her?’ I scoff. ‘Besides, that’s not the reason.’

Dane moves his arm and looks at me. ‘What, then?’

I look back and close the door. ‘Where’s Kallum?’

‘Seeing about some food. What’s wrong? You’re concerning me.’

I grimace. ‘I told you what my gift was meant to be, didn’t I?’

‘Aye, a shifter, but you never could shift. Nor feel the beast within you.’

‘Well …’ I give him a meaningful look. ‘I did, and … now I can.’

Dane sits up, looking much more interested now. ‘When?’

‘Last night … this morning. I woke up next to the Harbinger.’ I swallow hard. ‘Her scent is …’ I actually lick my lips.

‘The beast wants to … devour her?’ Dane asks slowly.

I raise a brow. ‘Yes, but perhaps not in the way you mean.’

‘Fuck!’ Dane swears. ‘Fine. But you need to get a handle on it. Do the quiet thinking and bring it to heel. If you shift here, they’ll hunt you down and slay you. We can’t travel with two feral beasts.’

I smirk at his tone. ‘I don’t think she can be considered a feral beast, at least not while she’s bound.’
