I see his raised eyebrows as I turn away, but he doesn’t have time to question me before the roar of the Breach has us scrambling up.

Dane pulls the Harbinger up by the arm, and before I can stop myself, my nostrils are flaring with the scent of her. Limes and vanilla pervade my nose, and all I want to do is curl up next to her so that I can keep smelling her divine body.

I shake my head a little at these odd thoughts.

‘Come on!’ I snarl. ‘I don’t want to be here for two weeks waiting for the next opening.’

We grab our bags, and I kick sand over our fire to smother it as I make my way to the Gate after the others. I step into the tunnel, my stomach lurching familiarly and then falling suddenly as I step out on the other side.

I take stock quickly, as I always do, making sure the others are here and ensuring there’s no danger waiting for us.

It’s dark and raining, so visibility is poor, but it looks like we’re in a sizeable town judging by the cobblestone street around the Gate’s circle. In my periphery, I see the Harbinger stagger to the side, her head lolling.

‘What’s wrong with her?’ I murmur, eyeing the nearby guard sitting in his guardhouse as I put up my hood.

I step forward into his line of sight so that he can’t see her. The last thing we need is for them to think we carry some disease and quarantine us for who knows how long.

Dane is pushing her upright, but then her knees give out, and he has to catch her.

Kallum is watching Dane and her dispassionately, and he rolls his eyes as he looks my way.

‘Humans,’ he mutters and strolls towards the guardhouse. ‘I’ll pay the Gate guard. We should probably get her out of the rain before her frail body gives out.’

I nod. ‘Find out where the nearest inn is and the time.’

I go over to Dane. ‘Do I need to carry her?’ I ask quietly, keeping my eyes scanning the shadows.

‘No, I think she’s coming out of it.’ He lowers his voice. ‘I know she’s meant to be suffering and all, but I think some real food would serve her well.’

‘Agreed,’ I say, watching her blink slowly up at me as if she isn’t sure where she is.

She looks around and steps back, away from Dane, with a frown.

‘Can you walk?’

She nods stiffly, shivering a little in the rain.

‘Come on,’ Kallum calls over his shoulder as he starts walking up the street. ‘We’re getting soaked out here.’

We follow him through the shadows.

‘Why aren’t there any fucking lamps?’ Dane grumbles next to me.

I shrug even though he can’t see me, and I glance down to make sure she’s still between us, noting that Dane is holding the rope, but it’s slack because he has a firm grip on her upper arm as well.

Kallum stops in front of us and goes through a door on the right side of the street. Usually, we’d wait for him to sort everything before we go in to draw less attention, but the rain starts coming down in sheets, so we follow him.

The main room of the inn is quiet and cozy, with a warm glow from a crackling fire and a pixie girl with fluttering wings who’s giggling and clearly flirting with Kal. Her eyes widen as she sees us, her cheeks reddening, and I make a show of ignoring her. Let Kallum have her if he wants, but I’m not interested in bedding any females at the moment.

I put a hand over my eyes and drag it down my face. I’ll probably shift and tear her throat out or something.

The pixie says something I don’t catch with a titter, and Kal smiles at her politely as she points to the stone staircase in the corner of the room, but I notice he doesn’t do anything to encourage her. That’s not like him.

Another pixie flutters into the room and frowns at the girl, who I’m guessing is his daughter. She stops giggling at Kal immediately and we’re soon making our way upstairs.

I go into one room with Kallum, but Dane stops me.

‘Your turn,’ he says pointedly, and I don’t bother to hide my grin.
