I don’t care about anything at all right now.

Chapter 13

Rylan

Their eyes. The way those kids looked at us. I will never forget it. I never want to forget it. It was hell for them; I could see it in their gazes. I trembled when they looked at me. I was sick to my fucking stomach. Some were small, too small to know what the fuck was happening to them.

None of them were over sixteen. There’s no fucking way. Girls, boys. Some had matted hair, and others were malnourished. If I weren’t a stronger man, I would have thrown the fuck up seeing them like that, but I knew I had to keep it together for them.

The Gods will take them someplace safe and get them treated by doctors. They’ll find their families if there are families left to find. One little girl sticks out in my mind. She was bleeding from a gash on her head and couldn’t have been more than six or seven. She looked at me with a fucking light in her eyes like I was her savior. Chills run down my spine as I shake the thought away.

“You ready?” Silas asks as he stands in the middle of the now-empty warehouse. Well, it’s not quite empty yet. The traffickers are here. The ones who held those kids hostage and treated them like they were shit. They’re now restrained and on their knees in front of us.

I walk up and down in front of them, wondering what I should do to them. What I could do to make them feel every ounce of pain they made those kids feel. Levi raped them with a broom handle. Silas made them choke on that same handle while I watched. My hands itch to get bloody. I did beat the shit out of one of them. He’s lying lifeless on the floor. There are six of them left. Six lives we’re going to take.

My phone rings for the millionth time in my pocket, but I slide my hand in and silence it. When I don’t answer, Levi’s rings next. And when he doesn’t answer, Silas drags his out and checks it.

“Who the hell is it?” I ask.

“Fucking Angel.” He clicks it off and slips it back into his pocket. I reach for the first bastard next to me and drag him to his feet by his greasy hair. Once he’s in front of me, I eye him up and down. I wrap my hands around his neck and start choking him. His eyes widen as he claws at my hands, but that goddamn phone keeps ringing and pissing me off. Just when he’s close to death, I let him go. I don’t want to kill him that easily. In fact, I want to play with him for a little while. I raise my foot and stomp it onto his neck, cutting off his air. He struggles on the ground, and I can’t help but laugh as he does. His little friends can’t do anything but watch and wait for their turns.

“Fuck! See what the fuck she wants,” I roar as I watch the life drain from this man’s face. I pull my knife from my pocket and step up to the next one as Levi carves up another. I drag the tip of the blade across his face, watching as the crimson rises to the surface of his skin. He screams from the pain before I move to his eye next. I dig my knife into his eye socket while he screams louder. Then I carve his fucking eye right out. He passes out, falling to the floor, but I don’t stop.

“You’ll never look at another child again,” I growl as I move to the next eye.

“Fuck!” I hear Silas from across the warehouse. I stand and wipe the knife on my jeans as I watch him rushing toward us.

“What is it?”

“It’s Tamsyn.”

“What about her?”

“She’s … I don’t fucking know, Ry. Angel said she found her in the shower, zoned the fuck out. She can’t get her to move, and she said not to get her mom or Brady.”

“What? Zoned out? Is she high?” No, Syn doesn’t do drugs. I would know.

“She doesn’t know. She said we need to get there. I told her we were an hour out, but she didn’t care.” Fuck! What the hell happened to her? Anger rushes me all at once. If someone hurt her, I will kill them all. If someone put their hands on her, I will fucking cut them off and watch them bleed out.

I pull my gun from the back of my jeans and blow a hole in the rest of these motherfuckers. I’m pissed I couldn’t drag it out and make them pay, but I need to get back to see what the hell is going on with Syn.

We’re heading for the door when one of the Gods stops us.

“Where are you going?”

“There’s an emergency. Can you handle this?” I ask, nodding over my shoulder to the bodies.

“Yeah, we got it.” I nod, and the three of us rush out to the SUV and climb in.

“What else did she say?” I ask as my insides rage. I can feel the demon, the devil in me, wanting to break free. Levi speeds out of the parking lot with tires squealing.

“Not much. Just that she wasn’t responding to her.”

“And she didn’t want her mom?” I ask. No. Syn doesn’t even like her mom. They don’t get along and never really have. That isn’t a big secret to anyone, though.

“She said no.” I slam my hands onto the back of the seat, angry at the fucking world right now. It’s not enough that we had to see those poor kids like that, but now we have to deal with Syn’s shit. I don’t know what the hell is going on in that head of hers, but I will fucking find out.

I try to focus on anything else as we drive back across the border. My hands sit on my knees, clenched into tight fists.
