“No.”

“What do you mean no?”

“I said no, Syn. If I have to shove it down your goddamn throat every day, I will!” he snaps as he pulls away and stands. I watch him pull his clothes on before I sit up.

“You don’t want a baby with me? Is that it?” I yell. Maybe what he saw me do makes him question everything. Maybe since I killed Jen, he thinks I won’t be a good mom.

“That’s not it.”

“Is it because I killed Jen?” He looks over at me and shakes his head. “Then what the fuck, Rylan!”

“I watched you kill her, Syn, and it hit me. I saw her draw her last breath, and while death and killing didn’t bother me, all I could think about was what if that was my daughter. What if someone challenged our daughter?” Oh my God. I didn’t think he would have looked at it that way. I look down at my hands and realize he was watching someone kill his daughter in his mind.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper.

“No, you’re not! And I’m not either, Syn. I wanted you to do it. Don’t you get that? A sick fucking part of me wanted you to do it! I wanted you to fucking challenge her and win because I want you!” My heart swells in my chest at his words. He does want me.

“But you don’t want kids.”

“Not in this life. Could you fucking imagine your daughter like that, Syn?” I shake my head.

“No. But then what do we do? It’s what’s expected of us,” she says, keeping her head down. I walk over to the bed and lift her chin with my knuckles.

“What I need you to do is trust me right now.”

“I do trust you, Rylan.”

“I need you to trust me fully, Syn. I’m going to do things, things I might not come back from.” I hear the knock on the door, and I look at him, confused.

“What do you mean? Who is that?” I ask. Ry pulls the rest of his clothes on and then his boots. “Rylan?” He moves toward me once more, grabbing my face roughly in his hand and forcing me to look at him.

“Do you trust me?” I want to scream at him. I want to know what the fuck he’s planning on doing, but I know I won’t get an answer.

“Ry,” I whisper.

“Do you fucking trust me, Tamsyn?” he roars this time. I nod my head, but he needs to hear it.

“Yes. I trust you.” The door to the bedroom opens, and Levi and Silas walk in with Becky and Angel. I grab Ry’s shirt and slide it over my head so I’m covered up a little.

“You ready?” Silas asks, looking to Rylan for an answer.

“Yeah.” I feel my heart sink in my chest as Silas kisses Angel and Levi kisses Becky. Then Ry turns to me and presses a kiss to my forehead, letting his lips linger a little longer than usual. When he pulls away, I feel like a piece of me is leaving with him.

I watch him walk out the door, never looking back while the other two follow him. Then I turn my eyes toward Angel.

“What are they doing?” I ask softly.

“They wouldn’t say. They said we’re to stay here until they return.” I can hear how sad she sounds, and it breaks my heart that they have to be involved in this.

I sigh and shove out of the bed, grabbing some shorts and pulling them on before wrapping my arms around Angel and holding her. I glance over and see the sad look on Becky’s face, too, and pull her into the hug.

“They’re going to be fine. Whatever it is they’re doing, it’ll be okay,” I reassure them, but I don’t know how much I believe myself at this point. I pull away from the two of them and think. What the hell are we supposed to do here while we wait?

“You hungry?” I ask, looking between the two of them. They both nod as I usher them out of the room and down to the kitchen. I have no idea what’s here or what Ry has but when I open the fridge, it’s fully stocked. I start pulling things out and setting them on the counter to make sandwiches. Angel and Becky both pitch in as I grab the liquor from the cabinet and shake it at them.

“Should we be drinking right now?” Becky asks. Maybe she’s right. Maybe we shouldn’t be.

“Fuck. You’re right. What if they call and need us for something,” I add. I set the bottle on the counter and opt for sodas and water in its place.
