“No problem. You want pants, or are you okay with what you have on?” Our clothes are dirty, but I opt to keep my shorts and follow the woman back out of the tent. Becky and Angel hurry back to the guys, but not me. I take a look around, wondering what the hell all this is.

“Do you live here?” I ask the woman.

“No. We’re only out here for you guys. I’m Sadie.”

“Tamsyn,” I tell her. She nods her head as if she already knows who I am, but I don’t ask her how she knows. “What do you mean you’re only here for us?”

“Hunter asked us to be here. He was hoping you’d come this way and find us. If you didn’t, there’s another camp to the south that would have brought you to us.”

“Are you Gods?” She smiles now.

“Women can’t be Gods. We’re servants, which is technically the same thing as a Queen to her King.”

“But we’re no longer Queens,” I say out loud. It feels strange to say it.

“I know you have a lot of questions, and we’re here to answer what we can. Hunter will be back soon to answer the rest. Let’s get you something to drink,” she says, leading me back over toward the fire. I walk around and sit next to Ry when he throws his arm around my shoulders. The woman, Sadie, passes us something to drink, and I take my water down in record time. Rylan takes a few drinks of his before passing it to me. I smile and down his water, too.

The guys all talk, but I zone out. I watch Angel and Becky. They don’t know what to do or how to act. They don’t know what’s happening, and neither do I, but I feel a sense of calmness come over me. Rylan keeps me tucked into his side, and that’s where I stay, listening to the crackle of the fire.

For the first time in my life … I feel free. Like there’s no weight on my shoulders. Nothing is holding me back.

I sigh as I relax into Rylan’s hold. The guys keep talking, but I don’t hear a word any of them are saying. I just close my eyes and smile.

Chapter 29

Rylan

I sit back and watch Syn with the other girls. She’s smiling, and I can’t help but smile at her.

“You really love that girl, don’t you?” Hunter asks.

“Yeah, I do. Think I always have,” I tell him.

“It’s all a fucked up mess, Rylan. I’m sorry it had to end like this,” Hunter tells me.

“It was bound to happen one way or another, right?” he nods his head as I bring the beer to my lips and take a long pull.

“Probably right.”

“How is my mom?” I ask him.

“Taking it hard. She had her son ripped away from her. How do you think she feels?” I nod. I know this is hard on her, and I miss my mom, but this is the way things have to be.

“I get it. What happens now?” I ask him.

“You had off-shore accounts, right?” he asks. I nod. “You start your life.”

“That’s it? Just start my life?”

“Yeah. There’s nothing else to do, Rylan. You’re no longer a King. You no longer have to follow their rules. You’re free, man. Live your life with that one,” he says, nodding toward Syn.

Hunter had a plan. If he killed Brady, then they couldn’t kill me. The fact that I killed Brady, and he helped cover it up … damn, I was beyond grateful. I’ve always liked Hunter, but we were never that close to each other. I was a King, and he was a God, and that’s two separate things. Finding out he was my half-brother shocked the hell out of me. I never pictured my dad as a cheater.

“What about my dad?” Hunter sighs and shifts in his seat.

“He will no longer be a leader. He’ll remain a King, though, which I think is pretty fucked up considering you got exiled,” he answers with a huff. I look back over at Syn and smile.

“I think that might have been for the best.”
