“Nope, I think that is it,” she said, looking down at her notepad. “I’ll see you next weekend and bring some black heels.”

“Ok, sounds great,” I said, seeing that my roommate, Carly, was calling me.

I slipped my phone in my back pocket. I would call her when I left.

“I’ll try and have your outfit before the event,” she called out before I left.

“Ok, don’t work too hard!!” I called out before leaving.

My phone vibrated again as I walked to the elevator. I took a moment to take a deep breath, hating when Carly called me over and over again. I pulled my phone out of my pocket as I got in the elevator.

This time it was Marsha calling, but the call ended quickly. I tried calling her back, but my reception was shit in the elevator. A feeling of foreboding washed over me. Something wasn’t right. It was the longest elevator ride and as soon as it opened, I bolted out, dialing Marsha.

“Noemi,” she cried.

“Marsha, what’s wrong, honey?’”

“You need to come home now,” she cried.

“Marsha, I need you to tell me what’s going on.”

She cried without saying anything, frustrating me. I put her on speaker as I ordered a car, trying to get her to say something.

“Marsha, dammit, let me talk to Carly,” I snapped when I finally ordered an Uber.

I paced in front of Cheryl’s apartment building.

“Where are you?” Carly’s voice finally came through.

“I’m waiting for an Uber, about fifteen minutes from our apartment,” I said quickly.

“Noemi, she fucked us over. It’s bad,” she said, her tone sounding defeated.

Yelling started coming from the phone, and I couldn’t hear anything for a moment until I heard our landlord's voice.

It took me thirty minutes to get home. I raced out of the car, running up to the landlord's office. An argument was happening between Carly and the landlord. He was a middle-aged man who looked like he never showered, didn’t know what personal space was, and looked like he took unethical forms of payment. I had only spoken to him twice when I moved in, and I made sure I stayed away from him.

“Please, I need my things,” she snapped. “I… it’s for school, please.”

“Look…”

“What the hell happened? I asked, getting to his door.

“Noemi!” Marsha yelled, throwing herself at me.

I grunted when she wrapped her arms around me, crying into my shoulder.

“You are two months behind on rent and I’m evicting you,” he said with a sneer.

“No, we’ve been paying Nela, there is no way in hell we are behind two months,” I said, rubbing Marsha on the back.

“No, she hasn’t paid me in two months, telling me you all were having a hard time.” He looked at me and then Carly. “I’ve left notices on your door for two weeks. You were there for one of them.”

He pointed at Carly who turned red.

“She said it was a mistake, I honestly didn’t think anything of it when you started arguing.” She looked at me, helpless. “I was rushing to class, I really thought it was a mistake.”

“Where the hell is Nela? Has anyone tried to call her?”
