“She’s not answering. It goes straight to voicemail. I called the diner she works at. They said she quit yesterday,” Carly said, making my blood go cold.

No, no, no!

“Fuck,” I said, as Marsha pulled away from me.

“She wasn’t there when I got home last night,” Carly said, making me wonder if she bailed on us yesterday.

“Can you just give us a few days to figure something out, please,” I pleaded.

“No, I’m out four thousand dollars,” he said, looking me up and down. “I need to get that apartment filled so I can try to make the money back.”

“So, that means we are only behind like a month and a half? What if I…”

“Didn’t you hear what I said?” He interrupted me. “I said two months. Two thousand per month.”

I clenched my jaw as I realized Nela had been pocketing money from us for six months and even longer from Carly. This fucking bitch had played us.

“Ok, fine, then let us get our things,” I said, thinking this was our only option.

“No,” he snapped. “You've been evicted and in our agreement it states that if I evict you, I get to keep whatever I deem is of value.”

“That sounds like bullshit,” I snapped.

“I’ll give you a copy of the agreement that has Nela’s signature on it,” he said with a creepy smile.

Shit. Fuck. Goddammit.

“Look, they are both students, please just give us thirty minutes to get as much stuff as we can.” I tried to keep the anger out of my voice. “After that, whatever we leave is yours.”

“No, I’m not stupid, you will take everything of value.” He rolled his eyes.

“Please, just work with us. I know you are out of money, but we are out of our home, please,” I pleaded. “We all lived together because we couldn’t afford a place of our own.”

He looked between us, his creepy gaze felt like a violation.

“Give me a month's rent and I’ll let you stay for the week,” he said.

“Two thousand for a week?” I sneered. “We just paid rent to Nela, we don’t have that kind of money.”

“I have…”

I shook my head no at Carly. She was saving up for some trip she was going to take for one of her botany classes next semester.

“I’ll give you a thousand dollars for the week,” I said, cringing because that was all the money I had and some of my savings.

“Three days and that’s it,” he smirked at me.

“Noemi, that’s too much,” Marsha whimpered.

“You guys need your stuff and I’d like to get mine too,” I said, feeling defeated.

“This has to be illegal,” Carly said looking at our landlord like she wanted to hurt him.

“Go get a lawyer,” he snapped.

We were at his mercy because lawyers were expensive and we were broke. We lived together because we couldn’t afford an apartment by ourselves. As it was, Carly and Marsha could barely pay their six hundred dollar rent.

“Five days,” I said, trying to get as many days as possible to try and find a place to live.
