“I am,” Noemi said immediately.

“Do they treat you well?” Samantha asked.

“There is no chisme to give,” Noemi said. “They are friends and I really like them, ok?”

I debated walking out of the kitchen slowly, but decided I would save her.

“Can I also have one of those mini pecan pies?” I walked in and Noemi quickly dodged her sisters reaching for the box of mini pecan pies.

“Thank you, Easton,” Rosa said.

“I can load the dishwasher,” I said, rolling up my sleeves.

“Oh, don’t worry about it,” Rosa said immediately. “I’ll do the dishes later.”

“I can wash them by hand if you’d prefer.”

I saw Noemi leaving the kitchen while both sisters looked annoyed.

“She has good days and bad days, but most of them are good. She holds the weight of her world on her shoulders, but we’ve been able to help her,” I said, throwing them a bone. “Vincent and I won’t hurt her.”

“She had…”

“He was an asshole,” I interrupted her. “We just want to help her and have fun in each other's company.”

“He left her in pieces, Easton.” Rosa looked up. “But she’s so stubborn she thinks she can do everything herself. We wanted to help her, but we didn’t know how. Our baby sister looked like a shell of herself when she found he was a piece of shit. She looks good now, better than I've seen her in the last 7 months.”

“Be honest with her, no matter what,” Samantha said. “She deserves that at least.”

“She deserves more than that,” I said, looking out at the dining room.

“You seem like good men. I don’t want to have to drag you to Mexico and have the cartel take care of you, ok?” Samantha said with such a serious expression that I didn’t know if I should be scared or impressed.

I smirked. “We don’t want that.”

“Come on, let's eat some dessert and we can come pack and tackle that mess later.” Rosa pulled me to the table. “Just make my sister happy even if it's only for a short time.”

“I’ll try my best,” I said, seeing Noemi look up at me with a big smile on her face.

I hadn’t noticed it, but they were right. Noemi looked different, but I wondered how much she had actually told her sisters about her life. My guess was, she didn’t tell them she had been living in a car, but it wasn’t my place to say anything. I was going to try my hardest to make sure she was happy for as long as we were together, even if that meant it was without me or Vincent.

We stayed later than we expected, but I didn’t want to leave. I would have been happy staying for a few more hours to soak in that family company to maybe last me for the rest of my life.

Samantha, Noemi and I had consumed too many shots when we decided it would be a good idea to drink every time someone said something sexual in the football game. Let’s just say I didn’t realize football was so naughty.

“Thank you for coming with me,” Noemi said, leaning on my shoulder. “I knew the girls would like you guys.”

“I liked them too. Samantha is something else,” I chuckled.

“Samantha is in her own little world,” Noemi laughed. “I don’t know how Sadie puts up with her, but they are so awesome together.”

“Sadie was great, she is definitely the person that keeps Samantha grounded,” Vincent joined in.

“That she is. They had a rough start, but I’m so glad they got their shit together,” Noemi said.

“They are protective,” I said, remembering the girls' veiled threats.

“You have no idea,” Noemi said, full of mirth. “Samantha showed up to my dorm and busted the door open to my college boyfriend’s room, and threatened to castrate him if he ever came near me again.”
