Page 10 of Hiding Desire

“I’m going to read up on what Harrison suggested,” I said.

She pressed her lips together and nodded before leaving the main clinic floor. I could do with a break, but Harrison had slammed a huge textbook down on the side and demanded I read four chapters in my clinic gap. My hands shook slightly, so I probably didn’t need to add caffeine. I tucked myself back against the wall and opened the enormous volume on restorative techniques.

A disturbance pulled me from the text that swam before my eyes. My breath caught as I saw who was striding into my space. The guy from the club last night. Today, he wore a charcoal suit, making his green eyes stand out.

I clutched the book against my chest as if it would shield me. He couldn’t be here. I darted my head around and noticed a few people staring open-mouthed. The same two men in black suits from last night shadowed him at a distance. My heart raced in my chest. Was he here to show me up? No, no.

“I’m sorry, sir. You can’t be here.” Harrison’s nasal voice appeared suddenly.

If I weren’t freaking out so badly, I would have laughed at the exaggerated swallowing motion Harrison made as the guy turned to stare at him. Harrison was a foot shorter, and his waist was probably the size of this guy’s thigh. Despite that, he pulled himself up, full of self-importance and opened his mouth.

“I have an appointment.” The guy’s Irish brogue was sharp, and Harrison jumped at the tone.

“I don’t think so. There wasn’t an appointment in Ms Shelton’s diary. As her supervisor, I should know.”

“You better recheck the diary then, friend.”

The way he said friend made me shiver. Harrison spluttered as the guy turned back to me.

“Ten thirty. They fit me in for a cancellation.” He ignored Harrison, his intense gaze on me.

I remained frozen as Harrison muttered about speaking to reception.

“Come on; I promise I won’t bite.” He grinned at me, and a dimple popped out.

He was ridiculously handsome with an undercurrent of danger, and I hated that my traitorous body liked that. Adrenaline pumped through me, and I glanced past him, wondering if I could run off. He followed my line of sight and cocked his head.

“Never run from a predator unless you can guarantee getting away.”

“W-what do you want?”

He grinned. “What, no, ‘no entiendo’ today? I wondered how you took a dental degree in a language you couldn’t speak.”

I dropped my eyes, my cheeks burning.

“To answer your question, I’m here for an oral inspection.” He came towards me, and I flinched, but he merely sat in the dental chair and crossed his hands over his lap. “Gowon, check. I really am on the schedule.”

I unstuck myself and tapped on the computer. Sure enough, a patient was booked into the slot that began ten minutes ago. Sean O’Sullivan. The O’Sullivan Group. So he was the big boss. My boss. I closed my eyes. Why now? I was so close to graduating. An intense wave of emotion lodged in the back of my throat.

Could I live with the comments from fellow students about stripping? Of course I could. My skin was thicker than that, but would it harm my standing at the dental school? The two lives weren’t supposed to mix.

Frustration welled up at being at his mercy. I smashed at the keyboard, navigating the medical file to avoid turning back to him. There were a few scant details on the system. He would need a complete history. It wasn’t uncommon for the dental school to slot general patients into our gaps as the restorative appointments were lengthy, and the waiting list for the dental school was long. But this man hardly needed an NHS dentist.

I picked up a clipboard with a history sheet to keep a barrier between us.

“Mr O’Sullivan?—”

“Sean,” he interrupted me.

“I need to?—”

“Dark hair suits you better.”

My eyes snapped to his.

“You can’t talk about that here,” I hissed at him.

He grinned widely. “Fair play, your secret is safe with me, hummingbird.”
