Page 11 of Hiding Desire

I swallowed thickly at his reference to my tattoo and the more painful reference he wouldn’t understand. If he wanted to remind me he’d seen me practically naked, then I would keep everything professional.

Gathering myself, I fired medical questions at him, not letting him expand on his answers before moving on. A smirk played around his lips as if he knew exactly what I was doing. I asked him about past dental work. His brilliant smile made it clear he was no stranger to the dental chair, but he was far from one of our usual patients.

“You have two implants at the front. How did you lose those teeth?”

“Boxing.”

“Surely you aren’t still boxing anymore with those implants?” My head shot up sharply.

He shrugged.

“You shouldn’t be fighting with those.”

“Why? Did the dentist not do a good job? Do I need to have a word with him?”

I blinked in shock at his undertone but composed myself.

“I’m sure they are perfectly fine. But while implants are arguably as strong as real teeth, being hit in the mouth carries far more devastating consequences to the bone they are implanted in than merely losing a tooth.”

“I still box, but that doesn’t mean I let myself get hit in the mouth.”

“That’s impossible to control even with a mouth guard.”

“Not if you’re good.” He held his arms out. “I’m fightin’ fit, doc.”

“Not a doctor.” I placed the clipboard down and took a deep breath. “I’m going to drop your chair back and check inside your mouth.”

Kirsty wasn’t back, but I was damned if I was keeping him here any longer than necessary.

He said nothing, but his green eyes watched me intently.

“Open,” I said.

When he opened his mouth, a mass of gold fillings greeted me, including some tricky marginal-fit ones. His front teeth were expensive implants, and he had multiple crowns, too. His gums were healthy, and he clearly had regular dental care. Unfortunately, his aftershave smelled amazing up this close, too.

“You have an expensive mouth,” I muttered, filling in my chart.

He grinned. “The dentist told me gold made the hardest fillings. Plus, if I ever get down on my luck, I could yank a few and melt ’em down.”

Something told me this man was never down on his luck.

“Gold fillings are an alloy and not pure gold.”

“Beautiful, smart, and speaks English,” he mused.

Biting back a retort, I reminded myself who he was.

“Your teeth are in excellent health, and I have nothing to add to your dental plan. Keep sweet things to a minimum, and we won’t have to add to the precious metal in your mouth.”

I spoke to him unprofessionally, but I was sick of feeling trapped. He came here to unsettle me, and between him, Harrison, and no sleep, I’d had enough today.

“But I like sweet things.” He stood up, not waiting for the chair to lift. “What can I say? I’m a man who likes dessert. Given half the chance, I’ll lick the bowl clean.”

Inappropriate heat fizzled through me as he stepped closer with a sly look. I coughed to clear my throat.

“You must remember to brush and floss after eating sugary meals.”

His smirk told me he knew the effect he was having.
