Page 18 of Hiding Desire

Loch started the car with a shrug. “No one listens to me.”

I stared out of the window. The plot had thickened around my beautiful hummingbird. What was she hiding from?

“Take us to Carlisle Road,” I said.

“Can we get some fish and chips if we are going to sit staring at a stairwell all afternoon?” Loch groused.

The big eejit was always eating.

“If you get them,” I conceded.

My thoughts turned back to her as we headed towards her flat, which I may or may not have sat outside for part of last night. Rosa. I wasn’t sure how much I liked her real name. I’d stick with Amy or hummingbird.

“Anyway, we won’t be staring at the stairwell. I’m going inside.”

“Fecking hell,” Loch grumbled as we re-joined the motorway.

Snapping my gloves off, I cracked my neck to release the tension, feeling drained. Today’s clinic had been gruelling, even without Harrison’s cutting comments. The other supervisor wasn’t pulling punches either. I didn’t know if it was because it was the final year or if it was just this speciality. Or maybe it was because I woke up hot and bothered by an inappropriate dream about my possibly-a-gangster boss. It was scorchingly hot and finished just before the best part. I was no stranger to sexual desire working in the industry that I did, even if my real-life experience with sex was lacklustre at best and awful at worst. I refused to grab Bob, my battery-operated boyfriend, and complete what started in dreamland, which meant more textbook diving at four a.m. It was annoying as it was my night off, and I used those to try to catch up on sleep.

I packed away and headed for my locker, looking forward to getting into bed early tonight. Maybe I could sneak in a telenovela. The lead character was about to find out she was heir to a powerful family, and the snide side character would get bitch slapped. I hated real-life drama, but I lived for that trashy fictional kind. Plus, the anticipation of removing this wig was palpable, and I could almost feel the fluffy onesie hugging me already.

“Amy, wait up.” Rosie jogged towards me. “I need a huge favour. I know you rarely go out for drinks after clinic, but could you come today?”

We stopped at the lockers, and she gave me a pleading look.

“Why?” I asked.

“Lester is going. I overheard the supervisors persuading him.”

Lester was the youngest supervisor and reasonably attractive. He provided helpful feedback. Most of us liked him, but Rosie had been crushing on him since he arrived last year.

It wasn’t my place to tell her it wasn’t a good idea to pursue her supervisors, especially after having a sex dream about my boss’s boss.

“What time are you going?”

“Right now. We’re going to Smeltering by the med school. It just opened. I need a wing woman.”

“Okay, but I can’t stay long. I’ve got to pick my housemate up from her placement, as her car is in the garage,” I lied.

I knew they’d get food and head into town, but I didn’t have the money or energy for that. Rosie squealed and jumped up and down a few times, making me smile.

Smeltering, the cheesily named bar was reasonably classy inside. Wooden floors and an expansive bar with multiple booths created a clean, fresh look – nothing like the dim lighting and sticky floors at Mystique Mirage.

Rosie towed me over to the bar and insisted on buying me a Diet Coke before she pulled me closer to the huddle of supervisors. Unfortunately, I hadn’t thought this through as Harrison was there. He narrowed his eyes at me as we walked closer. My heart thudded irregularly. Thankfully, he walked off as we arrived, and Rosie immediately started talking to Lester. I stood awkwardly, wondering exactly what she’d need me for until she asked Lester about a problem I apparently had with a patient. Resisting the urge to stomp on Rosie’s foot to shut her up, I nodded and winged it as Lester quizzed me.

His questions got more in-depth, and I excused myself to go to the toilet, tossing Rosie a look. She could have warned me to have a fake patient ready to go. I was no stranger to making things up as I went along, but I preferred notice. I headed for the toilet sign and turned into the corridor.

A pain in my upper arm flared as someone grabbed me roughly. No! I gasped and twisted away, breaking the hold. Harrison’s red face came into view as he went to grab me again, but I dodged him.

“What the hell?” I said.

“You think it’s okay for your fucking boyfriend to appear in the clinic and threaten me? That there would be no consequences? You fucking bitch. You can kiss goodbye to any offers from Sheffield dentists. You’ll be lucky to pass,” he hissed, spittle flying from the corners of his mouth.

My heart leapt and then sank.

“He’s not my boyfriend.”
