Harrison scoffed. “Your fuck buddy, then.”

“I’m not fucking him. I didn’t know he threatened you.”

Harrison sneered, but the fine tremble in his hands gave him away. A small savage part of me wondered why, if Harrison thought he was my boyfriend, confronting me would work. But then his colossal ego didn’t permit much common sense.

Harrison ran a hand through his hair and appeared to compose himself.

“If that’s so, you better make it up to me. Help me forget and make me less likely to tank your career before it starts. And don’t tell your not-boyfriend, or you’ll be sorry.”

“How do I make it up to you?” My stomach churned.

“I’m sure you can think of something if you’ve been sucking two-bit gangster dick,” he spat and turned on his heel.

I leaned against the wall, my breathing choppy. Why was it always a sexual exchange with men? I’d cleaned my life up and clawed my way back to my feet over the past decade, and I thought I was over this kind of bullshit. I might strip to pay my tuition, but I no longer offered extras. I was so close to my goal and the chance to leave that behind, and now this.

A fine tremble overtook me as my adrenaline dipped, and I staggered into the ladies to splash my face with cold water. The girl in the mirror looked pale and frightened with unfamiliar blonde hair. I swiped at the reflection, hating myself for this moment of weakness. Get it together.

I took a deep breath and headed back out to the bar. Rosie was still talking animatedly to Lester, and I didn’t want to be the third wheel, especially while I felt shaky. I headed to the bar and ordered some peanuts for something to do. The hairs on my neck prickled as I waited for my change. Behind the bar was mirrored, and I searched for the source of the feeling.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw his dark features. Sean’s stare was just as intense as when I’d been practically naked, and I hated the butterflies it set in motion in my stomach. The bald man and the two suits were with him. He crooked a finger at me.

Fuck. Seeing him here was the last thing I needed. Was it a coincidence, or was he following me? Something told me nothing was a coincidence with this man.

The barman handed me my change, and I stared at the coins for a few seconds before gripping them tightly in my palm. I would see what he wanted and then leave. The alarm I’d set with a ringtone to pretend Cat was calling me for a lift was due to go off soon, which would help me escape.

Staring at the wood grain on the floor, I headed directly for his booth. As I neared the table, I glanced up, and his eyes were on me, but the men he was with were all looking away.

“Fancy meeting you here. That’s three for three.” He grinned widely, and that damn dimple appeared.

Attraction rushed through me, and I gritted my back teeth. I would not end up like my mamá.

“What a coincidence.” I kept my tone light, but the giant bald man’s lips twitched as if he might smile.

“Sit down and have a drink,” he said.

“Thank you, but I need to return to my friends,” I answered politely.

“You mistook that for a request,” he replied, still smiling.

Irritation burned through me. This man was toying with me. I perched on the edge of the booth. Sean leaned forward, crowding me with his rich scent.

“Tell me, what did that melter say to you?” His eyes were startlingly green this close, and I didn’t stifle the hitch in my breathing at his proximity.

“What?”

“That supervisor of yours. You went to the ladies annoyed, and you returned upset. I saw him reappear just before you did. Ergo, he is the one who upset you.”

“He didn’t?—”

He pressed a finger to my lips, silencing me.

“Don’t lie to me. We’ve moved past the ‘no comprende’ bullshit.”

I leaned back, letting his finger fall away. “Why did you threaten him?”

“I threaten everyone. He’s nothing special.” He shrugged. “Except maybe a special kind of stupid.” He motioned to one of the suits, who strode off into the bar.

I shook my head. These men were playing games with me.
