Page 24 of Hiding Desire

Not much moved me these days. I’d seen and done too much shite, but the thought of what happened to my hummingbird’s mother turned even my stomach. I let the whiskey burn down into my stomach and mulled everything over. If she ran from the Stefanovs because they killed her mother, it was no wonder she was wary of me.

“As your brother, I need you to hear me out.” Loch ran a hand over his bald head. “This woman might be a honey trap.”

I paused with my glass to my mouth and stared at Loch. “Give me a good reason I shouldn’t shoot you in the leg?”

“I’m getting married tomorrow.” Loch smirked and raised his hands.

“I could put the bullet in your tiny brain and save Rada the hardship of being married to an eejit.”

“Don’t be like that. She loves me.”

The woman was madder than a box of frogs.

“Only a mother could love a face like yours.”

“Feck off.” He put his empty glass down. “For what it’s worth, my gut tells me Amy’s not a plant. If she isn’t, then she’s either in danger because your ugly mug is dribbling all over her, or she is on their radar for her own reasons.”

Considering her desperate ID change at fifteen years old, I suspected the latter. It made the most sense, but if the Stefanovs had me under surveillance, I’d tipped them off.

“Either way, I’ll need to bring her under my protection,” I mused.

Hide her away so she can’t escape.

“And if she’s a trap?” Loch asked.

“You brought a known killer into our house and forced her to be your wife,” I reminded him.

“There was no forcing. It was more like wearing her down.” Loch smirked.

“I’m not sure I’ve got time to wear Amy down.”

Things were more complicated than I first thought. The mania running underneath my skin demanded I kidnap her immediately to protect her. While I refused to be like my father, the stakes had increased exponentially.

“I’ll need to be more persuasive.”

“Believe me, kidnapping a woman isn’t the best start to a relationship.”

“You’re getting married tomorrow. That worked out fine.”

“I rescued Rada,” he protested.

“Rescued her into our holding cells?” I chuckled.

He shook his head but stopped biting.

“Are you not going to tell me it’s a bad idea?” I asked.

“Did you tell me that when it came to Rada?”

“No, I could see you’d gone barmy for her.”

“I can see the same thing.”

I tossed him the finger.

“I’m going to bed. It’s my last night as an unmarried man.”

“Pretty sure you should save yourself for the wedding night.”
