“Will others be joining you, or shall I have a small setting made up?”

“We’ll dine alone,” Sean said, his hand still on my back. The heat permeated my jeans and T-shirt, which I had hastily pulled over my bikini and booty shorts.

The man, presumably Paddy, pulled a smaller table over and rapidly set it for two. By the time he’d finished, a thick coat of sweat lined his brow.

“I’ll have Tina come straight up to you.” Paddy scampered away.

Sean pulled a chair out for me to sit.

“Is everyone afraid of you?” I asked.

“Mostly.” He tucked my chair in and then sat down, studying me with amusement.

“You don’t seem to have that problem. I can’t remember the last person who screamed at me and lived.”

I fought off a shiver. Fear turned far too many men on, and working where I did, I learned to suppress the signs. The truth was, I wasn’t as afraid of him as I should be. I was more fearful of what the lonely little girl inside me might allow him to do for a sliver of his attention.

The server appeared, and she looked equally as terrified as Paddy. An ache flared in my throat as I wondered if having people constantly afraid of him made for a lonely existence.

Tina handed us menus with shaking hands and asked what we’d like to drink.

Recklessly, I decided to have alcohol. Who knew if I had a job to go to tomorrow?

“I’ll have champagne,” I said. “I never got any last night.”

Sean grinned at me.

“Do you know what you want, or shall I give you a minute?” Tina asked.

When I opened the menu, I found it was written in Irish. I glanced up at Sean, who smirked.

“Do you like lamb?” he asked.

I nodded. With how hungry I felt, I could probably eat a scabby dog. Usually, I would grab snacks between sets, but I hadn’t eaten at all today because of various chores before work.

“I’ll have double my usual and some bread.” He returned the menu to Tina, who almost dropped it and ran away.

“Is it lonely, having everyone afraid of you?”

He grinned, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He was dangerously handsome, especially in that teal tie that brought out the colour of his eyes.

“Are you worried about me, a chuisle?”

“What does that mean?”

“My pulse,” he said, and my heart skipped.

I shook my head, reminding myself I couldn’t trust anything this man said.

“Where are your other henchmen today?”

He chuckled. “I like that. I’ll tell Loch.”

“Loch?”

“The big bald brute. I should imagine he’s enjoying his wedding night. However, I don’t want to think about that while eating. Or at all.” He mock shivered.

I smiled despite myself. “You did go to a wedding today.”
