Page 31 of Hiding Desire

That explained the flower in his buttonhole, which looked slightly crumpled.

“Yes, it would have been better if you’d accepted the date, but it was only a small gathering.”

I couldn’t imagine what type of woman was marrying the huge bald guy called Loch.

Tina returned with the champagne and some crispy-looking bread. She uncorked the bottle with trembling hands, poured us a glass, and added it to the ice bucket before rushing off like something was on fire.

I slugged the first bubbly glass back, needing something to take the edge off, then grabbed one of the bread rolls as my stomach grumbled. Sean refilled my glass with an amused look.

“I almost forgot. I got something for you.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a wide, flat jewellery box.

My fingers stilled, holding a piece of bread.

“What’s that?”

“A gift.”

“Why?”

“Because I saw it and thought of you.”

I rammed the bread into my mouth and brushed off my hands. Chewing slowly, I brought the box closer as if it contained an explosive. I hinged it open and swallowed thickly. The champagne had already gone to my head, and my eyes watered before I could stop them. A hummingbird covered in tiny diamonds with a small sapphire eye was nestled in the deep blue fabric.

“A hummingbird for my hummingbird.”

A lump rose in my throat, unrelated to the bread I’d eaten, and I pushed the box away as a wave of sadness washed over me.

“Don’t call me that,” I whispered.

“I’ve called you that before.”

And every time was like a knife to my heart.

“Just stop, please.”

“Why?”

“Because I asked, isn’t that enough?”

“Not for me.”

I hated him right then, forcing me to tell him.

“My mamá called me that, and she is dead. They killed her.”

“Who?”

“It doesn’t fucking matter. They fucking played with her and killed her.” I closed my eyes. “Just like you’ll do with me.”

Hands grabbed me, and I tipped. I shrieked, my arms flying out and swiping the glass off the table. It crashed to the floor. Sean carried me over to a couch and pressed me into the cushions.

His face was livid. “Don’t compare me to your mother’s killers, and don’t assume what I will do to you. Do I intend to kill you? No, unless it’s with orgasms. Do I intend to kill anyone who tries to touch you? Oh yes. I am a dangerous man, but you don’t seem to grasp that I belong to you now, and you belong to me.”

His chest heaved up and down as he glared down at me, his weight pinning me with his body wedged between my splayed legs, just like in the VIP room. His weight anchored me, and his scent drowned my senses. It rocketed desire through me unbidden. My gaze dropped to his lips.

“Don’t fucking tempt me. Humm—” he cut himself off and gritted his teeth. “Oh, fuck it.” He pressed his lips to mine.

Fireworks went off in my brain as all rational thought stopped. His lips were soft, but they pressed aggressively against mine, and I automatically moved against him, forgetting all of my earlier objections. Heat fizzled through me from my mouth right down to my centre as I parted my lips. His tongue slid into my mouth and twisted with mine. His masculine grunt pushed my need higher as I felt him hardened against me. My hands ended up in his hair, and I pulled on the strands, causing him to grind against me, making me gasp. Holy shit. If kissing him was like this, what would it be like to fuck him? Light-headedness invaded me at the lack of oxygen as my mind raced forward, imagining tearing off his clothes.
