“What about the cameras?”

“Er…”

“That’s not an answer, Cian.”

My patience was paper thin now.

“I forgot to put them on.”

“They’re always on.”

“Okay, okay, I turned them off. I had company.”

“So because you wanted some pussy you turned the security system off? Is that what you are saying?” My trigger finger itched, and the scars pulled tightly across my knuckles as I clenched my fist.

“It’s a good job that you are my cousin.”

My fist snapped out and broke his nose. The hit was far from satisfying, but it laid him out on his arse.

“You’re lucky he didn’t put a bullet in you. Useless twat.” Loch strode past him and off towards the small office at the back.

“Sean, I’m sorry,” Cian whimpered, clutching his nose.

“You’re not sorry, but you will be by the time we’ve sorted this mess out.”

The pitiful lock clicked open on Amy’s front door, and I resolved to get a locksmith to her in the morning. Better yet, I’d replace the door. The flat was dark as I walked to Amy’s bedroom. A clock on her dresser displayed two thirty. I cracked my neck from side to side and undressed. Checking the safety of my gun, I slid it under the pillow at her head and climbed in behind her.

“Wa?” she mumbled.

“Go back to sleep, a chuisle.” I pressed a kiss to her fragrant hair.

“Sean?”

“Shhh.” I pressed my back to the wall and hauled her smaller body against mine.

The tension of the day melted away as I held her. Many things were wrong right now, but she wasn’t one of them.

Her alarm went off at six, and her groan vibrated against me.

“Oh. I thought it was a dream.” She lifted her head, blinking sleepily at me.

In the night, she gravitated to my chest again, like a comfy pillow. My internal alarm woke me at five, and I spent an hour staring at her.

“Do you dribble every time you sleep?” I asked her, and she ducked her head.

“It’s rude to point out when people drool, especially if you sneak into their bed uninvited. How did you get in?”

“My key.” I stretched, popping out my back.

“Your…” Her gaze slipped down my body. “Your what?”

“My key. I took your spare one and made a copy. A company is coming today, and they’ll be upgrading the door and locks.”

“What? You can’t do that. Our landlord must agree on modifications, or we could be fined.”

“Not if your landlord wants to keep his kneecaps.”

It occurred to me that I could buy this place, but that would be a slow process. A phone call would set things straight, and she wouldn’t live here much longer.
