He stood up and approached my side of the table. My heartbeat picked up as he dropped to one knee, and time stood still.

“What?” I asked, dumbfounded.

He produced a box and popped the lid open. The rock inside the box was obscenely large. It glittered in the candlelight on the rooftop, and blood thundered in my ears.

“Marry me?” His green eyes burned intensely into mine.

My mouth opened and closed a few times, and the air vanished from my lungs. What? This was so sudden. He took advantage of my stunned state and grabbed my hand, pushing the vast rock onto my left ring finger. I stared down at it, dumbfounded.

“But…” I started, but he pushed forward and pressed his lips to mine, silencing my words.

He didn’t drop my hand as he went to sit back down, and the sounds of the city rushed back over me.

“Hang on. That wasn’t a question. We barely know each other. This is crazy!” I rambled.

“We can get to know each other. And no, it’s not a question. You are mine, and I am yours. I don’t need months and years to know that. You wake up each morning surprised to see me. This settles those worries. This thing between us isn’t temporary. Now you can move in with me.”

I clutched the tablecloth in shock.

“Wait… what? Move in with you?”

“Yes, we are engaged. And my back can’t take much more of your bed.”

That was hardly the point!

“You don’t have to climb into it every night!” I said, exasperated.

“I do because you are there. I can assure you my bed is more comfortable, though.”

“I’ve never even seen your house.”

“We can go now.”

“Sean… I don’t know. This is all so sudden. And… there are things you don’t know about me.”

Like my real name.

“Nothing you tell me will put me off you.”

“It’s not just that. I don’t know you either. Not properly.”

“You’ve met my ma. You’ve met Loch. You only need to meet my dogs and Trixie, and you’re golden. We can do that when we go back to my place now.”

“Now?” I squeaked before realising what he said. “I thought Trixie was your housekeeper?”

He grinned, picking up on my tone. “See, already territorial. Trixie is my housekeeper. She’s sixty-five and likes to pretend she’s everyone’s grandmother.”

My head reeled at that information.

“There are very few people important to me, and the jury’s out on you meeting the Steel eejits.”

I gaped at him. He’d made all these decisions.

“I need more time.”

Sean sighed and knocked his knuckles on the table. “You’re not giving me any choice here.”

“There’s always a choice, Sean. Even if you don’t like it,” I replied, my heart pounding, but he didn’t say anything.
