He chuckled, and my eyes flew to his face. “Here,” he said, holding out a big flat box.

I’d not seen it in my haste to rush to the bathroom this morning. Tugging my towel tighter, I laid the box on the bed and lifted the lid. A silky black dress peaked out from a mass of tissue paper inside. I pulled it out, and it rippled fluidly like water from thin spaghetti straps. The cowl neck flowed up and over, leaving the back mostly exposed. It was stunning and clearly expensive. Below the dress were a pair of black diamante-encrusted heels with red bottoms.

“Wow.”

“You like it?”

“It’s stunning.”

“You’ll make it stunning.”

I blinked at him as something fluttered through my chest. I should have known better than to be wowed by expensive gifts, but no one had ever bought me something like this. No one looked at me the way he did. I realised I was dangerously close to falling for Sean, and as I watched him fish out his gun from underneath the pillow, I prayed it wasn’t a mistake.

The upright heaters pumped out heat, making the rooftop warmer than it should have been in November. The night was clear, and the stars twinkled above our heads.

Sean glanced around multiple times. More of his men lined the restaurant than usual. Ian and Craig weren’t here. He’d been extra vigilant since we left the house this morning. Despite the opulent surroundings on the rooftop, it was setting my teeth on edge.

“I didn’t know somewhere like this existed in Sheffield.” I shifted in my seat, trying to quell my stomach’s unease.

“The city is hosting more rich people than a decade ago.”

“Because of the Steel Brothers?” I questioned.

Sheffield was famous for its steel industry and the millionaire investors who made the city their home.

“Liam would love that.” Sean snorted.

“Do you know them?”

“Liam is my cousin.”

“Really?” I paused my fidgeting.

I’d only seen pictures of the fierce-looking businessman but didn’t notice any likeness to Sean.

“Distant cousins.”

“Some girls used to fantasise about them visiting our club one night. Tanya had a poster of them from some men’s magazine in her locker.”

“Not you?” Sean leaned forward.

I smiled into my wine glasses. “Would it be a problem?”

Sean studied my face and sat back in his chair. “I don’t enjoy killing family, but…” He shrugged.

“You are ridiculous.”

He didn’t answer as our starters arrived.

I gulped down my Mediterranean salad. I went for light choices because this dress was beautiful but tight, and I didn’t need a food baby to accessorise it. The food settled my stomach a little, and the next course of gnocchi had a heavenly creamy sauce that complemented the wine. We didn’t speak much, and I drank sparingly, not wanting to embarrass myself again.

The sounds of the city were muted up here, but the lights twinkled behind Sean. The main restaurant downstairs had created an exclusive rooftop location. There weren’t many tables up here, and the others were empty.

“Is everything okay?” I asked Sean, noticing the set of his jaw.

This man had many faces, but I’d grown to differentiate his masks from those he gave me. He held my gaze momentarily, and emotion played across his face.

“I have an important question.”
