“I don’t want to know why you have bags of your own blood with you.” Oscar collapsed onto his chair behind the desk.

“It’s sensible in my line of work.”

I had a fridge at the warehouse and at my home. There was a technician Dr Ali used to make sure we stored blood correctly.

“Can you be sure they’ve not been tampered with? If someone has betrayed you, then they could kill you off with a transfusion reaction and not even be blamed.”

This woman was too intelligent for Oscar.

“Only someone clever would think of that, Doc. I think I’m safe.”

“All the same. I wouldn’t risk it.”

I nodded at her. My head swimming slightly from the whiskey and the blood loss.

“Who is trying to kill you now?” Liam asked.

“Bulgarian gang. Their leader’s getting out next week.”

“Boyan Stefanov?”

I nodded. He’d obviously heard on the news. Not much got past Liam.

“But you’ve got a rat?” Oscar asked as Eve injected me with local, and it stung like a bitch.

“Indeed.”

Liam jerked his head up, and he looked between Oscar and me. “That’s why you came here?” he asked.

“Partly. I thought Eve here could help me. But I need your help. I need a money trail following.”

I was close to getting the proof I needed. My gut told me I was right, but the proof had evaded me. I was missing something, and it was driving me nuts.

“I thought you had a whizz-kid IT guy?” Oscar cut in.

“I do, but…”

“He doesn’t know who to trust. Okay, I’ll need details,” Liam said, grabbing a pen and pad.

I relaxed back into my chair. His ready acceptance helped settle the raging beast inside me that wanted to carve up the world and cut out the canker from my organisation. These two men stood to lose much by associating with me, yet they were willing to help. They were men I counted as friends but kept at arm’s length. It reminded me of Loch and my promise to tell him what I suspected. My father had been a paranoid bastard playing his cards close to his chest, not sharing anything with others, and I’d been leading by his example. Maybe it was time for a change now that I had Amy.

Liam drove me home in my car with Oscar following. My wound was mostly still numb thanks to Eve’s liberal use of local anaesthetic. I climbed out once we pulled up in front of my house, pushing the head swimming away, not wanting to show weakness in front of my men.

“Is this woman of yours here willingly?” Liam asked me as he got out.

“Tell me, if Chloe was in danger and reluctant to be taken to safety, what would you do?”

His gaze darkened.

“I think you have your answer,” I said, rapping my knuckles on the car’s roof.

“Just take care of yourself,” Liam said gruffly, stalking away towards Oscar’s car.

That was practically a love letter from that grumpy bastard. I waved them off and concentrated on making it up the steps. I didn’t check to see if Loch was home. I headed straight for my room, keen to see Amy. Unlocking it with my spare key, I stumbled inside, and a movement caught my eye. I lifted my injured arm too slowly to prevent the blow, and the blinding pain across my temple sent everything black.

“What did you do?” The Bulgarian woman, Rada, rushed into the room, followed by the bald guy Sean called Loch.
