I froze, clutching the thermos. My stomach churned with knots. Seeing him laid out on the floor tore me down the middle. Had I killed him? I should run, but I needed to check if he was okay.

More men appeared in the doorway, and I shrank against the wall. I’d missed my gap. A long groan from the floor snapped my eyes toward Sean as he rolled over. Blood stained his clothes, and a bandage peeked out from his jacket.

“She got you good,” Loch said as he helped Sean sit up. “Who was the last person to knock you out?”

“Tommy Molloy, bastard caught me from behind, too.” He rubbed his temple where an enormous egg had formed.

I winced at the sight, averting my eyes.

“He didn’t enjoy getting beat by a twelve-year-old.” Loch chuckled.

They were joking right now, but I attacked him and didn’t succeed in getting away. I was a dead woman. A lump rose in my throat, and images of my mamá floated into my mind. I edged toward the door, but Loch moved swiftly and filled the doorway, flanked by two other guys.

“If you run, the dogs and the men will chase you, and Sean’s already pissed off enough.”

Rada moved, drawing my attention; her expression looked haunted, and I remembered my courage.

“I won’t let you take me to them,” I said, my voice breaking.

Loch looked between Rada and me, realisation dawning. “You think we are Bulgarian mob lackeys?”

I gripped the thermos painfully. “Everyone has a price.”

“You’re wearing Sean’s ring. You think he’d sell you to Boyan Stefanov?”

A shudder ripped through me hearing that name spoken out loud, and I closed my eyes, assaulted by foul images of the woman I loved the most in the world. Rada made a sound, and I opened my eyes to see her reaching out. But she paused, and her hand fell back to her side.

“Let’s get you up.” Loch moved back to Sean, whose expression was unreadable.

“Gowon with you.” He batted Loch’s hand away and clambered unsteadily to his feet, one arm held loosely at his side. “Everyone out,” he barked at his men.

What had happened to him? I gasped as he staggered and lost what little colour he had.

“Fecking hell. Tell me you got some medical care wherever the fuck you went?” Loch manhandled him back to the bed.

“Eve sewed me up,” Sean said, collapsing back onto the pillows.

“Who is Eve?” Rada asked, moving forward now to inspect him.

Yeah, who was Eve? And who was Rada? I clutched the thermos flask against me as if it could somehow hold me together.

“Oscar’s wife. She didn’t want to use the blood. Could the bags here be compromised?”

Rada bristled. “No, only Dr Ali and I have the keys.”

“Get Dr Ali and some supplies, darlin’.” Loch kissed Rada on the head.

It answered my question about her. She must have married the giant. She hurried out of the room, avoiding my gaze.

“A chuisle, come and sit down. You look exhausted,” Sean said, patting the bed with his hand.

My eyes pricked with tears, hearing the concern in his tone. Was this a trick? I’d assaulted him, and he wanted me to sit next to him. Was he going to kill me? My mouth went dry.

“I don’t like that look. Come here. We need to talk.”

“I’ll take that.” Loch plucked the thermos from my hands and led me by the elbow.

“I…” I opened my mouth to apologise but then closed it again.
