Was I genuinely sorry I’d hit him? He drugged me and locked me up. Loch said they weren’t working with the Stefanovs, but how did Sean know my name?

“Good girl. Don’t apologise for things you’re not sorry about.” He grinned at me, and I wondered if I’d hit him harder than I realised.

I perched on the edge of the bed, but he sat forward and grabbed me with his good arm. I squealed as he tugged me up next to him.

“That’s better. Fuck, I’ve missed you.” He buried his face in my hair. “I could have done without the welcome wagon, but I’ll let that go. I’d say we are even.”

“Even?” I said, trying to wiggle away, but despite his multiple injuries, his good arm was like an iron bar.

“Unless you want to make it up to me.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“Why did you kidnap me?” I demanded.

“Because you’re mine.”

I guess it was better than selling me out to Mamá’s killers, but it wasn’t great.

“You can’t just steal people off the street and proclaim to own them!”

“I can.”

“What gives you the right?”

“In my world. I am the judge, jury, and executioner. I make the rules.”

“That’s not going to work for me, Sean. That makes me a prisoner.”

“That wasn’t my intention. I needed to protect you.”

“Making decisions for me when I don’t know all the facts isn’t protecting me.”

“I couldn’t risk you panicking and running away.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but that’s exactly what I did when I saw those pictures. But that didn’t make me feel better.

He sighed. “I have to keep you safe, a chuisle. You are my world.”

What could I say to that statement?

Rada and Loch returned with a short man carrying a doctor’s bag. He clipped a pair of glasses on the end of his nose.

“Who stitched you?” he asked once he uncovered what looked like a gunshot wound on Sean’s shoulder.

A wave of nausea passed through me. Who had shot him?

“An ER doc.”

The doctor clicked his tongue. “Not a bad job considering.” He replaced the dressing and started doing various tests on Sean. “Did they give you some fluids?”

Sean nodded. It didn’t sound like he’d been to a hospital. Worry for him crawled through my chest.

“I’ll get you some antibiotics. Let me check your blood count, and we’ll decide on the blood. Rada told me about the worry over contamination, so it might be safer to give you an iron transfusion.”

“Fair play. Do what you need to, Doc. I need to be up and about.”

The doctor clicked his tongue again but didn’t say anymore. I got the impression people didn’t argue with Sean. I waited, squashed to Sean’s side, expecting to face some hostility, but no one said anything. I felt Rada’s eyes on me, but I avoided looking directly at her, fiddling with the covers instead. Loch hovered around her, and it was obvious they were together.

Eventually, the doctor left, saying he would visit Sean later, taking Rada with him to help with the blood sample.
