I have no idea how he thought that meant go further, but when his hands cupped my ass, my knee met his balls.

Landon dropped like a stone. “Kezia,” he grunted as he rolled on the floor.

“They called me Zia,” I said as I watched him. “When I fought, I liked Zia.” I stepped over him as I left the bathroom. “I miss her,” I mumbled. Coming back into the family room, I saw the party was getting rowdier.

Kris would hate it.

I hated it.

It was time to go home.

There was no point saying goodbye. I dared not look outside in case I saw too much. Instead, I left and headed home.

I was halfway to the cottage when I knew he was there.

CHAPTER 27

Kezia

“Thought you’d be here sooner,” I said to the night as I walked on, my pace steady, even if my legs were not.

“Are you drunk?” Cannon asked as he came out of the darkness and walked beside me.

“I think so.” I thought about it. “I was… I think I may be losing it. I ran out of wine,” I told him easily. “Have you got any?”

“I didn’t come to party,” he told me grimly.

“Hmm.” Turning my head, I looked his way. Even in the moonlight, he was gorgeous. “Landon kissed me.”

I saw his eyes flare briefly. “Is that so?”

“He says he’s my mate.”

I heard the scoff. “And what do you think, pup?”

“I think when I fought in the rings, they called me Zia. I like Zia. You can call me Zia.” I reached my cottage. “You can’t come in.”

Cannon smiled. It had no warmth. No mirth. I felt sobriety rushing back.

“My brother’s where the party is.” I pointed behind me. “Go there. It’s him you want to talk to.” Without waiting for a response, I walked to the door, trying not to show him I was hurrying.

Closing the door behind me, flicking the lock, I didn’t falter when it burst open moments later as Cannon let himself into my cottage.

“Kezia, are you running from me?”

“Nope.” I staggered as I tried to get my boots off. “Floor’s unsteady,” I told him. “Kris isn’t here. He’s at the party. Go there.”

“Your brother doesn’t interest me,” Cannon snapped, grabbing me by my hips and holding me steady. “Stay.” The look in his eyes was firm and sure, the command natural. I remained mute as he waited for an argument or sharp response. With a quirk of an eyebrow, I saw some of his anger melt a little.

Stooping, he bent and started to undo my laces. I felt his breath on my legs, and I looked up at the ceiling, biting my lip against the moan as his fingers trailed over my calf as he unlaced the other boot.

“Lift,” he commanded, his voice quiet, his breath tickling my skin.

I did as I was told, raising my leg as he pulled off my boot. When they were both off, I lost about two inches in height. But still, I felt tall as the alpha looked up at me from where he still crouched, poised on his toes, ready to pounce.

“So, did you let him kiss you?”

I blinked in confusion. “I didn’t let, he just did.” Pushing my hair off my face, I shrugged. “It was weird.”
