“Will stay right here,” I said, pulling the bottle of almost empty red to me. “I’ll have another one of these,” I told Landon as he looked between the kitchen and me. “Cheers.”

Settling back into my chair, I watched as Bale’s two children created a party from thin air. As I ate my way through the platter Cass had made earlier, I saw them both work, and frankly, it was unnerving. Had it not been so repulsive a thought, and had I not seen my brother with her, anyone would think Cass and Landon were mates.

It must be a twin thing.

Later, when my brother came home, he looked surprised to see so many people in his backyard. He made his way over to me, where I was still hogging the fire pit with another bottle of wine.

“Do I want to know?” Kris asked, taking the bottle off me and taking a swig. I’d stopped using the glass a while ago—it had been slowing me down.

“At this point, I don’t think I know,” I told him honestly. “Am I drunk?”

He looked over at me and gave a nod. “On your way to wasted, I’d say.”

I giggled. “Nice.”

Kris kicked off his boots. “Let me catch up.” He took my wine bottle off me, finishing it in three swallows. Minutes later, Cass was on his lap, and they were wrapped around each other. I may not remember much, but I knew I didn’t want to see that.

Grumbling about losing my prime spot, I got up in search of more wine.

Landon cornered me in the kitchen, which was unfair. It was bright, crowded, and had no red wine.

“Did the wine get drunk?”

He grinned at me. “No, babe…you did, though.”

“Babe?” I rolled it over my tongue. “Babe.” I inhaled deeply. “Nope, I don’t like it.” I swayed slightly. “I did what?”

“Got drunk,” Landon answered with a laugh. “Your lips are stained red with the wine,” he added, moving closer.

“Really?” I leaned back, rubbing at my lips. “Weird.” Looking around, I saw lots of pack, some in couples, some just hoping to hook up. I hated this scene. “I need to pee.” Pushing away from Landon, I got free.

Shaking my head, I looked at him. “Did you hug me?”

He shook his head, his eyes dancing with laughter. “No, Kezia, I was holding your hip.”

I looked down at my shorts, inspecting both sides, then looked up at him with a shrug. “Still got ’em.” I made my way to the stairs, but Landon caught my hand.

“They don’t like people in their space,” he told me. “There’s a bathroom this way.” He led me by the hand through the pack that was in the room. I kept staring at our joined hands because I didn’t remember him taking it or him ever wanting to hold my hand before.

It was weird, but maybe it didn’t feel weird. Maybe it was nice to hold hands?

“Here.” He pushed a door open. “I’ll wait here, okay?”

“Yup.”

Inside, I took care of my bladder and then stared at myself for a very long time. My lips were red. I tried to wash it off, but I think I made it worse. Then, I spent a long time looking at the silvery scar on my arm.

“You shot me,” I told the scar. “You fucking shot me.”

“Kezia?” Knocking happened, so I looked around. “Kezia, I’m coming in.” Landon stuck his head around the door and saw me braced against the sink, my head turned to watch him. “You okay?”

I pointed at my lips. “Won’t come off.”

Landon moved closer. “Really?” His voice had dropped. “Let me try.”

It was such an obvious line, but still, I didn’t stop him when his intent was clear, and instead, I waited to see if it would be different this time. His lips were warm, a little bit dry. Maybe that was my lips, so I licked mine to wet them. I heard him groan and had no idea why, but when his tongue licked at the seam of my mouth, I opened.

Landon licked inside my mouth. It was weird, like he was licking a lollipop, but there was nothing there to lick, because I didn’t move my tongue back. It tickled though, and I started to laugh.
