Alpha Dick of the Century.

“Ooh, goody.” I retreated to my cot and sat. I’d stripped it of its remaining sheet yesterday and shoved it through the bars. No one had commented on it. Or removed it. I guess Royce only did cooking, and laundry must be up to someone else.

“You can go,” Cannon murmured to Royce as he came to stand in front of the bars. His gaze swept over me, the frown I thought I saw was so brief I was sure I imagined it. “Pup.”

“Asshole.” His eyes narrowed, and I dramatically slapped my forehead. “Oh right, I forgot. Alpha Asshole.” I looked past him, searching the shadows for Nikan, the only shifter I’d met here I liked. Kind of. “Where’s your brother?”

“Not here,” Cannon answered tightly as he bent and picked up the plate from the tray. Uncovering the food, he sniffed it deeply. “Mm…don’t you love the smell of meatballs?” He picked one up, popped it in his mouth, and chewed slowly. “Delicious.”

“That’s mine.”

“No,” Cannon corrected me as he took another meatball from the plate. “Nothing here is yours.” He popped it in his mouth and grinned at me as he chewed. “Your demands are quite annoying.”

“Then let me go, you irritating asswipe.” I watched, transfixed as he swirled his finger in the sauce before licking it clean. Closing my eyes against his obvious amusement, I willed myself to stay strong and not show him weakness.

“I can’t let you go because you’re a danger,” he told me bluntly. “We discussed this.”

My eyes snapped open, and I fixed him with a glare that would have had my brother battening down the hatches. “We discussed nothing. You like to hear your own voice. I am being held here against my will.” The plate was in his hand, his hold on it almost careless in appearance. “That food is mine,” I bit out, and when he went to speak, I hurried on. “That food was meant for me.”

Cannon placed it on the floor, and I wanted to kill him. I felt her behind me, straining against my hold to keep her back. Licking my lips, I raged the silent battle within while he stood in front, not knowing I was wrestling her back.

Cannon’s sigh echoed in the barn. “You aren’t beating her,” he said with a shake of his head.

It appeared I hadn’t deceived him like I thought. He knew too much, this alpha. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Do not lie to me, pup.”

“Then don’t speak in riddles,” I snapped back.

“I don’t know why I come in here,” he muttered as he turned away. “I’m going to?—”

“What!” I yelled. “You do nothing! You say nothing! I’ve been here for weeks. Either let me out or do what you keep fucking muttering about. But just for the love of Luna, do something!”

He was at the bars in two steps. It should have frightened me to see the rage in his eyes, but instead, it made me step closer.

“Do something? You want action from me?” He snarled, his eyes tight with fury.

No. “Yes.”

The air escaped him in a rush. Large hands curled around the bars, fingers long and strong, locked tight on the bars.

“Your heat is coming,” Cannon told me, his eyes holding mine. “Tell me, little pup, do you want me in there with you, or do you want me out here as a reminder to the pack that you are not to be touched?”

I swallowed nervously. “You can tell?”

“Your scent is quite potent,” he growled, stepping back.

“Oh.” I tore my gaze off of his. “I didn’t know it was at that point yet,” I admitted, wondering how I was yet again in a situation where Cannon was experiencing my heat.

“Because you’re clueless about most things,” he answered curtly. “Royce!”

I jumped in surprise as the order was barked, not at all surprised to see Royce coming quickly to his alpha’s side. Cannon stooped and picked up the plate, handing it to him.

“She’ll need fresh meat, not this,” he told him. “I saw her last time…deer sates her.”

“How recently slain?” Royce asked with a questioning look at me.

“Still breathing,” Cannon grunted. “She needs the kill.”
