“I’m still here,” I reminded them both sharply. “Let me out, and I’ll come back.” I ignored Cannon as he turned his head to look at me, but for some reason, my attention was on Royce only. “I’m a complete security issue. You know the men go wild and stupid, and it’s just a complete nightmare for you to handle. Really, do you want to fight your own pack over the likes of me? No, it’s stupid. If you let me out, I’ll run it out of my system, and then I’ll come right back.”

“You’ll come right back?” Cannon asked dryly.

I kept my eyes on Royce as I answered the sarcastic twat beside him. “Yup. You won’t even miss me.”

I saw Royce’s lips twitch as he looked away. “I’ll get some of the pack on the deer. How many? One or two?”

Cannon gave a small nod, and my instinct to run was overshadowed by the thought of two juicy deer being my next meal.

“Two?” I asked him, hating how hopeful I sounded.

“Two,” he confirmed, his face once more unreadable. “You need to do one thing first.”

“No.”

His head cocked to the side, a sly grin playing about his lips in a challenge. “Chicken, pup?”

“Fuck you.”

“We can do that if you prefer.”

I gaped at him. “Wh-what?”

Cannon gave a careless shrug. “It makes no difference to me if you eat first or fuck first. Either way, you still need to do one thing.”

“I’m not having sex with anyone in this pack. I’m definitely not having sex with you!” When he said nothing, I stepped back, my knees hitting the cot as I put as much distance as I could between the alpha and myself—a tricky thing to accomplish when trapped in a cage.

“You need to shift,” he spoke as if he hadn’t witnessed my retreat.

“No.”

“Pup, you need to shift. You need to regain control, and the only way to do that is to shift.”

“I said no. I’m in control.”

We were locked in a stare-off.

“You’re weak,” he told me calmly.

“You starved me,” I answered back, just as coolly.

“You have not been starved,” he answered. “She needs to come forward.”

And I realized what they had been doing. What he had made them do. “You thought by keeping her hungry, she would take over?” I gaped at him. “That’s barbaric!”

“You killed three men!” he growled back. “That’s barbaric!”

“They were going to rape me! And then kill or torture me or both. That fucker shot me three times.” I was so angry I was gasping for air. “If I killed Bullet, then he deserved it.”

“So you did know them?” Cannon asked me, his look shrewd. “Who were they to you?”

But I was too angry to talk to him. I was too angry at being in this cage. I was too angry he had tried to force the shift this way. It was cruel and unnecessary.

“I want you to go,” I told him, purposefully sitting on the cot, my back to him, staring at the darkness.

“You are not in charge here, pup. You’re not even in charge within yourself,” he added with a scoff.

“Just leave,” I whispered, but I knew he heard me. I could feel the pain starting in my gut. “I can’t let this happen with you here.”
