“Then you’ve known some shitty alphas,” he said dryly, turning to leave.

“Bale is decent,” I blurted. “He runs a good pack.”

“The pack that turned their back on you? The pack that never accepted you? The pack who never looked for you once when your brother helped you escape?”

He was at the door.

“The pack that took us in when our parents were murdered,” I said to him, the food souring in my stomach. I hadn’t said one word of my brother’s suspicions since I had been here. Let’s face it, I had a lot on my plate, but as he taunted me about my previous pack, I couldn’t stop my tongue from blurting out things I knew I should keep to myself.

“Murdered? Ever asked yourself why they took you in?” he sneered as he stepped outside. The door was closed before I found my voice again.

I spent the night pacing my cell. The question turned over and over in my head, and no answer was forthcoming. Why would he imply my old pack had something to do with this? Is that what he was implying? I was lying down on my cot before I even noticed the spotlight was off.

I stood and looked around. I could see the whole barn. My wolf came forward, and we shared a look.

It’s been like this since you woke up this morning.

It had?

Why hadn’t I noticed? Why was I so blind to what was in front of me?

“What’s he playing at?” I asked her out loud.

The hunt for him is over.

“Oh.” He had what he wanted? He knew what had happened, so he didn’t need to hide anymore. That made no sense. “I don’t understand.”

Males are confusing. She tossed her head. Alpha males are worse.

I couldn’t argue with that.

“I should have noticed I was no longer under a spotlight,” I griped. “I’m supposed to be on my guard, and I didn’t notice the lights were on?” I gave her a reproachful look. “You could have told me.”

Why? I was aware. You are blind to much when he is in the room or when you are thinking about why he is not in the room.

Stating the obvious wouldn’t help either. “Shut up.”

She shook her head again. I wish to run.

“In case you haven’t noticed, we’re not in an open space.”

Get the male. Give him what he wants. Let us out.

“No.”

She huffed as she lay down. You did not mind his taste before, do it again.

My cheeks flamed red. “I am not kissing him again,” I hissed at her. “Where’s your pride?”

She kept silent, but I knew it was different for wolves. My attraction, bleurgh, I hated saying it, but my attraction to the arrogant alpha was very much a human thing. She wouldn’t understand that the possibility of Cannon rejecting me was a crippling fear. That he only kissed me the first time to trick me.

What was I saying? I didn’t want to kiss him. He was gorgeous. No, he was insufferable, not gorgeous. It was bad enough he was my first kiss—he didn’t get to be any of my other firsts.

Ever.

Looking around the barn, I noticed something I had been blind to all day. There were no windows in this barn. The walls weren’t wood. They were steel.

I wasn’t in a barn.
