“Evan,” she rasped. I was utterly fascinated with what my pheromones were doing to her.

In the next heartbeat, I’d shifted back, catching, then sweeping her up in my arms.

“I’ve got you,” I murmured in her ear.

She wrapped her arms around my neck, tilting her head back. I captured her lips with mine, not one to deny my mate anything she wanted. Then I was striding back to the house as she kissed me like she was in a frenzy.

Her lips glided over my chin, my jaw, her tongue following in its wake, making my skin spark and burn for more of her touch. She made her way down my neck, then possessively scraped her teeth over my skin.

I growled, my fingers digging into her waist, her leg. “Fuck.”

“That’s the plan.” Her voice was hoarse and sexy, and I couldn’t make it up the stairs fast enough. I didn’t care that it was the middle of the day and other people were in the house. I didn’t care if Mariah screamed my name loud enough for anyone nearby to know exactly what caused it. In fact, my dragon, still so close to the surface, wanted just that, for everyone to know who she belonged to.

Mariah tore my shirt off the minute I kicked our bedroom door shut, clawing at me as if she were feral. I turned and shifted her in my arms, pressing her back to the door. She wrapped her legs around my waist and ground against me, her fingers digging into my shoulders.

I growled. “I like you like this.”

She let out a breathy laugh as her head fell back. “I don’t know what’s come over me. And this heat in my chest…”

“It’s your dragon. I could feel her. She’s stirring in there.”

She shook her head. “That’s not what I mean.”

“What do you mean?” I dropped my head to her neck and inhaled, then dragged my teeth over her neck just as she had with me.

Her body shuddered. “I mean I’m going to literally burst out of my skin if you don’t get inside of me right now.”

“Then, let’s fix that problem.”

I tugged at my jeans before shoving them down while Mariah shimmied her leggings halfway down her thighs. It was all I needed. Cock in hand, I dragged the swollen head across her pussy, groaning when I found her dripping wet. Once I’d gripped her ass, I slammed into her with one stroke, burying myself deep as she cried out, her hands clutching my hair.

“Evan.” My name was a strangled cry of bliss.

“That’s right.” Fuck, she was so tight, so wet, and her whole body pulsed with heat. I thrust into her over and over, sweat beading on my skin and hers while our fire only grew stronger.

I yanked on her shirt, shredding it as I pulled it right off her, feeling more beast than man in this moment as my mate writhed and moaned with pleasure. I palmed her breast, flicking my thumb over the taut nipple, my mouth finding hers again in a desperate kiss full of fervor and need and desperation.

Mariah rolled her hips and met every stroke as our bodies slapped together. I barely maintained my grip of control over my body as our tongues entwined and teeth clashed.

Then we were crashing over the precipice, with Mariah clamping around me, and liquid fire in my veins as I roared in pleasure, my orgasm ripping through. I held Mariah, kissing her while she rode out her own release, and I kissed her still as aftershocks wracked her body, the touches of our lips becoming softer and slower as we came down from the heights.

She pressed her palms to my cheeks, her eyes wide, and breaths coming in rapid pants. “What was that?”

I grinned; my own breathing ragged.

“That’s only the beginning. I can’t wait to fuck you when your dragon is fully awake.”

She laughed. “Maybe there are some upsides to this.”

I grew serious, brushing hair from her face. “There are so many. So much to look forward to. We’re going to make it through this and come out stronger on the other side.”

I believed it with my whole heart. And when she brought her mouth to mine once more, I hoped she was starting to believe it too.

Chapter 8

Mariah

By this point, I shouldn’t have been surprised. My past was a web of interconnected events and people that all led back to the shifter world. In a way, the fact that I had shifter blood in my veins explained a lot. It was no coincidence, though meeting Evan had been purely happenstance. If I’d never become his nanny, would I have ever known about this part of my past?
