Dangerous things sometimes come packaged in beautiful wrapping paper—just like this woman. Everything about her exudes power. It vibrates off her very bones.

“Is she ready?” Her voice is heavily accented, though my head is so fuzzy I can’t place it.

The white-haired man nods. “I’ve removed the block. You should be able to access her magic now.”

The woman steps up to me and places her hands on my head the same way he did moments before. As soon as her eyes drift closed, I know I’m in trouble.

I brace, ready for anything, but nothing can prepare me for the agony that tears through me. Everything blinks out, my vision darkening as my skull feels as if it is being cleaved in two.

Bile coats my throat, which feels ragged as screams spill out of my mouth. I’m dying. At least that’s what it feels like. No one can experience this much pain and still be breathing.

But through the pain crushing my body, images start to flash behind my eyes. I try to make sense of them, try to focus on a single one, but my brain is too muddled.

I’m going to pass out. The pressure in my head is so intense that I don’t see how I can stay conscious any longer. Just as the darkness is about to claim me, I see a face.

It’s only a brief moment, but ice-blue eyes fill my vision, piercing me as if they can see into my soul. Fear clutches my stomach, twisting my insides as I take in the dark blonde hair braided at the side of her head and the charcoal markings drawn across her face, a cross on her chin. They mean something—something I know I should remember.

A headache splits through my temples, spreading through my head before exploding down my neck. The only thought that comes to me before I lose my hold on my consciousness is that we are all going to die.
