Page 18 of Awakening His Mate

“Wrong. While she is breathing in the same space as my mate, she is entirely my business.”

Roux stands, gently grabbing Sawyer’s arm. He doesn’t lose the hard expression, but I notice he relaxes under her touch.

“Dove isn’t a threat to you or your mate.”

“Again, wrong.”

What the fuck does he want me to say to that? Dove hasn't made a move against Roux, and she's not leaving. If they throw her out, I’ll go with her. I’ve made myself perfectly clear, so the only thing he’s doing is pissing me off and he seems to be enjoying it.My wolf growls, urging me to give him control of this situation, but he will not be as measured as I am when it comes to Dove.

My wolf has zero doubts that she is ours.

“Guys, can we just calm down?” Halle steps between us, but Cade grabs her arm, pulling her back against his chest and wrapping his arms around her like a steel band. It earns him a dark glare, but she doesn’t attempt to get free of his hold.

Sawyer moves closer again, and my body preps for whatever he might throw at me.

“She’s a threat to every single one of us, you included, which you’d see if you pulled your head out of your ass for?—”

I don’t hear the rest of what Sawyer says. I shove him back so hard that he stumbles at least five steps. The momentum takes Roux with him, but Cade reaches out and steadies her before she can fall.

It’s like pouring gasoline on a fire.

Sawyer growls, his eyes flashing red as he lunges for me. I barely have time to brace as he slams into me with enough force to throw us both on the floor.

Pain flares through my hip and side, though I’m able to ignore it as anger spreads through my veins like poison. Sawyer is bigger than me. I am the smallest of the vargr wolves in my pack, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to take shit lying down.

All that pent-up rage flares to life inside me, and I let it go, like an elastic band being released. I slam the heel of my palm up under his chin, snapping his head back. The resulting growl should probably worry me, but I’m already shoving him off.

I get to my knees before he hits me with enough force to rattle my teeth.

Motherfucker.

Blood floods my mouth, and I swallow it down as I wrap my hands around his neck. I’ve known this was coming since the second I started protecting Dove.

He needs to protect his mate. He has found his star in a sky full of them—his one in a million. Most wolves never find their true mate and are forced into chosen bonds, but he did the impossible, and every fiber of his being wants to keep her protected.

What he and the others don’t seem to grasp is that the intensity of feeling he has for Roux even after such a short time is the same as how I feel about Dove.

He smashes his fist into my face, the skin across my cheek instantly feeling stretched and tight. My wolf roars, snapping its teeth and trying to force a shift. It takes all of my strength to hold him back, and part of me wonders why I do.

I should just let myself go, become the animal they think I am.

Dove is the only thing that holds me back. She needs me to be strong, and I need the security the Sanctuary provides to keep her safe.

I manage to get a couple of hits in before Cade wraps his arms around his brother, dragging him off me. I suck in a breath, my chest aching, before I scramble to my feet. I’m still geared up for a fight, but Halle steps in front of me, placing her hands on my chest.

Her green eyes lock onto mine, urging calmness from me, but I’m not sure I can give it to her. I have never felt this angry before.

“Halle!” Cade’s voice barks a warning that she ignores. The only way he can reach her is to release his hold on his brother, putting her in the line of fire between me and Sawyer anyway.

Wyatt and Abel hover close by, but neither try to touch me. They won’t risk me losing my shit and accidentally hurting Halle, who I’m starting to think may have zero sense of self-preservation.

It’s a good move on her part, though. As pissed as I am, I’m not going to risk her getting hurt in the crossfire.

I peer down at her, disliking the anxiety that dances in her eyes.

“Are you scared of me, Halle?”

Her gaze rises to meet mine. “Honestly, no, but I’m scared for you, Jackson.”
