Page 83 of Awakening His Mate

“You’re bleeding,” she tells me, and I follow her line of sight before I press my fingers to the side of my jaw. They come away coated in bright red liquid.

“Shit.” I blink the dizziness from my vision, trying to focus on her. The hunter didn’t touch her, and yet I scan her for injuries. “Are you hurt?”

She shakes her head. “I’m fine, but you’re not. Can you stand?”

I’ll drag myself out of here if necessary. We can’t stay. The sound of fighting beyond the cabin is growing louder.

With her hands still wrapped around me, I stand, not liking how much my body sways. I can’t ignore the way I’m stumbling, and I curse under my breath, knowing this is going to make it harder for me to protect her.

“You need to sit down,” she tells me.

I shake my head as a scream reverberates through the air. “We need to help the others. Wyatt is out there alone.”

Her skin blanches, her eyes flaring wide, and she doesn’t argue as I pull us both to the door.

It’s chaos outside. Strangers race across the grass, kicking in the doors of each cabin they come across. Most of the ones they are attacking are empty, waiting to be filled, but I’m worried about the others further down.

Dove’s hand tightens in mine, and I can tell what she is thinking. It is the same thing running through my mind.

I hope like hell the others got out.

They’re everywhere, I say through the pack link. Don’t go out the front.

I pull Dove back inside, rushing us through the cabin to the doors that overlook the porch on the back. Peering through the glass, I don’t see anyone, so I open the doors and carefully step out. Dove stays close to me, and I can feel the pounding of her pulse in her wrist.

“Don’t leave my side,” I order, waiting for her nod of affirmation before we rush down the steps.

Tessa and Abel’s cabin overlooks the lake. Our pack link doesn't include Abel, so I don’t know if he managed to get out of there.

Are they safe?

“We have to check,” Dove says, as if she has read my mind.

The last thing I want to do is run toward danger, but there’s no way in hell we can leave them to face this alone. I stare at the cabin, trying to see if there is any movement inside, and that’s when I see Tessa.

That settles it. I don’t give it another thought as I pull Dove behind me. Keeping to the back of the cabins, I duck low, Dove doing the same as we rush to the back door of their cabin. I try the handle, but it doesn’t budge, so I rap my knuckles on the glass lightly.

After a moment, a terrified Tessa glances around the edge of the sofa. When she sees us, relief floods her face.

One arm wrapped around her stomach protectively, she rushes to the door, twisting the key in the lock. Dove and I slip inside quickly, and my girl pulls free of my hand so she can wrap her arms around Tessa.

“Where is Abel?” I ask, not seeing the big wolf anywhere.

“He went outside.” Her voice trembles. “I couldn’t stop him. He’s trying to protect me and our baby, but he’s just going to get himself killed.”

Fuck. I understand why he would do this, but Tessa needs her mate. Dove’s eyes lock with mine, and I can see the moment she realizes what my plan is.

“Jackson…”

“If I’m not back in five minutes, start making your way to the main house. Stick to the path behind the cabins, keep low, and use whatever magic you have to.”

“I’ll come with you.”

“Tessa needs you, sweetheart.”

Indecision wars on her face for a moment before she nods. “Help Abel.”

I give them both one final glance before I slip out the front door. The fighting seems to be focused around the side of Halle and Cade’s cabin. It’s clear the Order attacked from the trees behind there, using them to hide their movements. Despite Cade’s assertion that we should meet at the main house, he is in his wolf form, attacking several hunters, while Halle fires power at anyone who comes close.
