Page 84 of Awakening His Mate

I spot Abel in his wolf form grappling with two females, both tau, the air heavy with the scent of their power. I don’t see Wyatt at first, but then I spot him, surrounded by two other wolves while he is blasted with power.

I go to him first, seeing the danger he is in. My heart is racing as I pull my clothes off, shifting mid-step into my wolf.

I make quick work of the first beast that is tearing at Wyatt’s back legs. I taste his blood, the copper tang of it coating my tongue as I rip his throat clean out.

The other wolf turns to me, and a wave of power slams through my body, making my legs buckle. My wolf howls, whimpering, as pain explodes through my every cell. My skin burns, and I can’t breathe as I see lights flashing in my eyes.

Fuck… Am I dying?

My mouth is full of blood, and my insides ache. Just when I think I cannot endure any more, it stops, and I scent her. My heart dips. No, no, no. She’s not meant to be here. She’s meant to be running.

My wolf lifts his head as Dove strides toward us, her hand outstretched, firing power at my attackers. I struggle to get onto my front paws, my head rolling with dizziness as I move toward my woman.

I wish we were connected by a mating bond so I could tell her to save herself, but there is no way for me to communicate that. All I can do is watch as she continues to take out our enemy. Tessa is with her, standing just a few feet behind her, blasting her own power too.

I almost stop breathing when a bolt of magic is fired at them. Dove goes down to her knees before she manages to stand again. The look on her face is cold and calculated, something I have not seen before, and I hope I will never have to see it again, but as I watch her in action, I can’t stop pride from swelling inside me. She is so strong, so capable, and absolutely stunning in this moment.

One of the tau tries to fire at Tessa, but Dove stands in front of her, her power stopping it from touching either of them.

I try to get up, but my back legs don’t seem to want to work, so I stay on the grass, trying to breathe through the agony tearing through me.

Everything darkens for a moment, and my wolf panics.

Get up.

I ignore his urgent demand. I can’t move, even if I want to. Everything is swirling around me, and my body feels like lead.

Fingers tangle in my fur. “Jackson.”

Dove.

The desperation in her words almost penetrates the fog descending over my vision.

“Halle!”

I blink as the redhead female drops in front of me. I shake my head, indicating with my muzzle that Wyatt needs more help than I do. I can’t see him properly, but I can smell his blood and I don’t think he’s moved for a while.

Halle doesn’t look happy about this, but she goes to my brother, placing her hands over his bloodied fur. All I can see is chaos and carnage. Sawyer, Roux, and Apryle have joined the fight as well, but it is clear we are overrun.

This is not something we can win.

Hopelessness washes over me. I’m not going to be able to keep my promise to Dove. There is no way we are coming out of this in one piece. I turn my head toward her, and I wish I was in my human form so I could tell her everything I’m feeling.

As if she senses my need, her gaze meets mine, her eyes narrowing, and I wonder if she sees the desperation there because she shakes her head, as if saying this isn’t over yet.

But there are three more wolves circling us, snapping their teeth. Wyatt is moaning, and I can’t move. We’re fucked. I don’t know where Cade went, and I can’t see Sawyer or Abel.

I’m cold.

I don’t want to die.

Don’t let me leave her.

One of Dove’s hands stays tangled in my fur, the other locked in Tessa’s grasp as they keep the wolves back using their combined power.

“Don’t you give up,” she hisses at me.

I’m trying not to, but everything feels heavy.
