Page 91 of Awakening His Mate

“I was just thinking about the lines I’ll cross for you.”

He surprises me by smiling and moving his mouth next to my ear so he can speak without being overheard.

“Sweetheart, there is no line for me when it comes to you. I’ll destroy anyone who tries to hurt you. You have no idea how feral I’ll go when it comes to your safety. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before, but I know there is no world for me that you’re not a part of.” He kisses me, and I melt into his touch, my hands pressing against his chest. It’s not hard or frantic, but filled with so much emotion it brings tears to my eyes.

How do I survive without him?

It’s not a question I’ll ever answer because there is never going to be a moment when he is not with me.

“You’re my mate,” he says. “I don’t care what biology or magic say—you’re mine in every way that counts.”

“I’m your mate,” I agree and feel the truth of it as I say it.

I don’t know why there is no bond between us because my wolf and I both want him to be ours. We’ve claimed him in every way a wolf can be claimed, and he has done the same. I see it in his eyes when he looks at me—the sense of ownership, possessiveness.

“Get a room,” Apryle mutters, and I bite my lip to stop myself from grinning.

But Jackson isn’t deterred and gives me another kiss before settling back into his seat.

After driving for a little while, my hand locked with Jackson’s, my gaze drifts between the two men sitting in the front. Neither man has said a word.

“Where exactly are we going?” I ask.

Beck looks at me through the rearview mirror. “Our group has a compound an hour away. Callum’s been building it and adding to it for years. I guess it’s kinda like your Sanctuary, but not as pretty.”

“It’s pretty if you like concrete,” the other guy snorts. He twists in his seat. “I’m Archie. Beck’s my older brother.” He emphasizes the older, making Beck roll his eyes.

“And you just love to remind me of that, don’t you?”

I smile, nuzzling against Jackson. “You’re both tau?”

“Yeah, though I got more witch in me than wolf,” Archie says. “I can’t even really sense my wolf other than when it’s life or death.” He opens his palm, and a little flame appears, dancing on his hand, before he snaps his fingers around it, extinguishing it. “But I have a lot of cool party tricks.”

“My magic’s stronger too,” I say.

Apryle nods. “I guess we’ve all got a heavy dose of power.”

“Beck can shift, though he can’t hold it for long,” Archie says.

Roux is the same. I guess their wolf halves must be more potent.

“How long have you known Callum?” Jackson asks.

“About five years,” Beck answers, his hand resting on the steering wheel as he navigates the roads winding through the mountain pass. There are thick trees lining either side, and my wolf wants to run through them. “He found us in an Order convoy, both of us terrified and expecting to die.”

“What happened?”

“Callum and his men attacked. They freed us and gave us a place to call home. We’d never had that. I’d follow him to the gates of hell if he asked me to.”

Archie smiles at his brother. “We survived, which didn’t really look like an option for a while. Callum’s good people, and he has good people around him. You guys’ll fit right in.”

I glance at Jackson, hoping that’s true, because I am desperate to find out the truth about what happened to us when we were at the facility together.

Chapter 24

Jackson

I’m not sure what to expect, but I keep my wits about me, and the pack link open. I can feel Cade, Sawyer, Halle, and Wyatt are all nervous, and I’m sure they can tell I am too.
