“I feel so bad about Luna’s van. She’s going to have to pay for those repairs.” He groans and tips his head back against the seat.

“No, she’s not.”

He looks over. “What?”

“I’ll take care of it. She won’t pay for anything. Don’t worry.”

I feel him studying me. “That’s really cool of you. Thanks.”

I’m not doing it for him. Well, I’m not doing it just for him. He’s a good kid, and it was an accident and I’ve got the resources to make this into a non-problem for everyone. Of course I’m going to do that. “It’s not a big deal,” I say.

After a minute, he says, “This is a cool car.” He’s glancing around and touching random things. He sends the seat gliding backward. “A Mercedes. Need me one of these.”

“Thanks. I bought it for my twenty-eighth birthday.”

“So, you and Luna, huh?” Brady asks. “What’s up with that?”

“Don’t worry about me and Luna.”

“I am worried. She’s a cool human. Don’t be a dick to her.”

I appreciate his willingness to defend Luna. “I will not be a dick.” Then I reach out and hit a button on the screen. “Call Owen Phillips.”

“Dude.” Brady reaches out like he’s going to end the call.

“Do not touch that,” I tell him, trying to be stern, but not threatening. It’s hard as hell. I decide to go for another tactic. “I’ll be cool about it, you know. If Luna tells him, it will be worse.”

That makes his hand drop. But he says, “He’s going to freak out no matter what.”

“Hey, Cam, what’s up?” Owen says, sounding surprised.

He should be surprised. If it was up to me, I’d never speak to him ever again.

“There’s nothing to worry about, everything is fine, but—

“What’s wrong?” Owen demands. “Is Luna sick? Did she have a car accident?”

Brady shrugs. “Told you.”

“Brady?” Owen asks, voice confused.

“It’s not Luna. Brady had a minor fender bender in Luna’s bakery van. He’s fine, but I’m taking him to the ER just to make sure he doesn’t have a concussion.”

“Holy shit. You sure he’s okay? I can’t come home. Aw, Christ.”

“He seems fine. I just want to make sure since he kissed the windshield.”

“He wasn’t wearing a seat belt,” Owen says grimly. “What a dumb ass.”

“I can hear you, Dad,” Brady announces loudly. “We’re on speaker.”

“Why weren’t you wearing a seat belt, you dumb ass?”

Brady gives me a told-you-so look. “I just forgot. I was in a hurry.”

“No one needs to be in a hurry when they’re driving a four thousand pound vehicle.”

“Okay. Sorry.”
