I almost snort at that but restrain myself.

“Call me after you’ve been seen by the doctor. I need to call your mother.”

“Don’t call Mom.”

“I have to call your mother. I’m in Seattle, and you’re supposed to be leaving with her in two hours for her college reunion.”

“I don’t even want to go to that.”

“What, so you wrecked a van to get out of it?”

“Yes, that’s exactly what I did,” Brady says, sarcastically. He looks at me. “See?”

“See what? Let me talk to Cam again.”

“He’s still here, Dad. That’s what a speaker phone does. It allows you to talk to multiple people at the same time.”

Now I’m really entertained. Brady is at peak smart-ass.

Owen sighs heavily. There’s a long pause, like he’s struggling to maintain patience.

“I promised Luna I would help her at the wedding reception,” Brady says.

“Why would you do that when you’re supposed to be going to Pittsburgh with your mother?”

“Because Mom thought you’d be home.”

“Your mother thought we wouldn’t make the playoffs?”

“Yep.”

“Oh.” Owen sounds stunned and offended.

“She doesn’t want me in Pittsburgh, either. She’s going to want to drink wine with her sorority sisters and talk shit.”

“Then why can’t you stay with Dev?” Owen sounds confused.

I’m very confused. I don’t even know who the hell Dev is.

“Because he’s going with her. Amara is with Grandma and Grandpa.”

“Then you’ll have to fly to Seattle if you don’t want to go to Pittsburgh.”

“For one night? That’s stupid.”

“So is leaving you alone in my house.”

This seems to be spiraling with no solution. “Brady can stay with Luna,” I offer.

I haven’t asked her, but I know she won’t mind. She’ll want to keep an eye on Brady. Knowing her, she feels somehow responsible for his crash. “And me.”

There’s a pause. “I mean… I guess… I’d have to run it past his mom.”

Brady looks relieved. “It’s the perfect solution. I’ll be helping with this wedding anyway and then I’ll be right there at the bakery to help Luna clean up. Plus, it gives me time to study tomorrow for my math test on Monday.”

Nice one. The kid is working all the angles.

“That’s okay with you, Cam, if Chelsea is fine with it?”
