“Thanks for that.”

“My pleasure.” And I really fucking mean that.

She finally lets go and rocks back on her heels. “So… who was that guy?”

“My son and Lydia thought that he seemed like your type, so they invited him to stop by. It was matchmaking gone wrong. I apologize for my son’s stupidity.” I tap my head. “Remember, I told you hockey players take too many hits to the skull.”

“I… wow.” She bites her lip. “Do I seem that desperate to teenagers?” She looks half-amused, half-horrified.

“I don’t know what anyone looks like to teenagers. I thought they were buying weed from him. The truth was worse.”

That makes her snicker softly. “It really is worse. Especially since I said the things I did at the party. You must really think I can’t get a date.” She puts her hands to her cheeks. “I’m actually embarrassed. I don’t like this feeling at all.”

“Don’t be embarrassed. I’m the one who keeps sticking my foot in my mouth. My very big foot.”

“You know what they say about men with big feet.”

I do. I cough a little and cover it with my fist. I want her to say it because she looks… flirty? I think. “What do they say?”

“They need big shoes,” she says lightly, with a quirky smile.

I laugh softly. “Right. Of course.” I want to kiss the corners of her cute little mouth.

She reaches behind me and flicks the lock on the door. “Since my case is almost empty, as you pointed out, I’m going to close up a little early. Brady and Lydia can head out for the night so Brady can study.”

“Are you sure?”

She nods. “School is important. And I’m worn out. It’s been a long week.” She starts walking toward the counter, where Brady and Lydia are furiously whispering to each other, heads together.

“Okay, thanks. And I’ll buy whatever you have left.” I’ll spend a thousand dollars on eclairs if it will make her happy.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I want to. I like your stuff.” I really do. She’s a fantastic baker. I also like her ass. Which I’m staring at.

The jeans she’s wearing sit high on her waist and they flow loosely down her legs, but they’re snug in the butt, the seam sliding up between her two tight little cheeks, and I want to touch her so damn bad.

“You’ll have to tell me what you like the best,” she says, turning just in time to catch me checking out her backside. “You have a sugar fetish, don’t you?”

“Uh…” I have no idea how to respond to that. She’s definitely flirting and I’m way the fuck over my head here. “Yes.” I pat my gut. “Obviously.”

But Luna gives me a little sexy once-over. “Hmm.” Then she turns to Brady. “You can go home with your dad,” she tells him. “After we box everything up for him.”

“Everything?” Brady shakes his head in disbelief. “Dude. Get a hobby.”

“Dude. Get your ass moving if you want to see Lydia in the next month,” I snap.

This recent power struggle is really getting on my nerves.

Ten minutes and two hundred and twelve dollars later, I have four bags of pastries and we’re heading toward the door. It turns out a mostly empty display case is still a lot of pastries when you crowd them all together in boxes.

“See you Saturday,” Lydia says to Luna, who is biting her lip as she waits for us to exit so she can relock the door.

She tried to dissuade me from buying all of this three times, but I persisted. Because I committed and I won’t back down from that. Even if I am going to gain ten pounds.

“Goodnight,” she says to me, giving me a faint smile.

I want to ask her out. I think she wants me to ask her out.
