But she also wants Alexsei to ask her out.

But he’s not going to because he wants her to figure some stuff out.

But he’s also been hit in the head a lot and I think maybe he’s being really stupid about this. He needs to go for this girl.

So maybe I need to not worry about him. It would be a life lesson for him to lose out because he was fucking around.

But maybe I’m reading it all wrong.

And Lydia and Brady are hovering. I refuse to embarrass Luna or myself in front of them. More than I already have.

“Goodnight, Luna. Be sure to lock up.”

She nods and we exit. I watch to make sure she locks the door and activates her alarm system, then I start down the sidewalk. I shove two bags at Lydia. “Here, take these home for your family.” Lydia has four younger siblings.

“You like Luna,” Lydia murmurs, looking up at me in awe as she juggles the two pink bags like this is the most romantic thing she’s ever witnessed in her entire life.

Brady’s jaw drops. “Dad. Is that why you bought all these pastries?”

“I did it to apologize for your crappy behavior,” I tell him, dryly. I pause on the sidewalk and look around. “Where the hell is my car?”

“It’s right here,” Miss Helpful says, pointing to my car, which is indeed right here.

“Oh, man, you’ve got it bad,” Brady says gleefully.

He’s right. I do.

I push my fob to unlock the doors. “Just get in the car.”

CHAPTER 11

Luna

"Oh my gosh, Luna, this order is so huge! You should be so happy."

I look over to where Dani is arranging frosted sugar cookies on one of the glass trays. She is sincere, I know, but she has no idea how much work I've had to put in on this huge order for the after-game party for the Racketeers.

"Yeah, it is a huge order. And it kind of came in last minute." I arrange the macarons by color on another tray and set it up on one of the higher tiers. I should've skipped the macarons. The hockey players don't appreciate them. But the order did specifically include them.

"Well, I'm thrilled you did it. It's been a while since we've been to a game together, and it was so great to sit with you tonight even if it was only a period.”

Again, I haven't been to a game because I've been so busy at the bakery. I mean, besides the fact that I can think of ten other things I’d rather do besides go to a hockey game. But I love my best friend. She is truly the sweetest person I know. And she is genuinely happy that this order came in for the bakery. But Dani hasn't been around a whole lot. She's been spending so much time with her boyfriends and with even one, that could take a lot of her time, but she’s got three. And they’re pretty demanding. She hasn't been back to our apartment in two weeks.

Also, we own Books and Buns together, but the books side of the business hasn't done as well. So Dani's work level isn't quite the same. Not that I expect that she would know that.

And I'm not upset with her. I know she really wants this to do well. She thinks I'm an amazing baker, and she's really proud of me.

Then a thought hits me and I turned to face her. "Please tell me that you didn't ask Nathan to place this order."

Dani looks up from where she's now rearranging the cookies she just arranged. She gives me a little frown. "No. I didn't have anything to do with this." Her frown deepens. "Nathan ordered all of this?"

One of her boyfriends is the billionaire owner of the team. I will admit that ordering a bunch of cupcakes and cookies for his players after a game he didn't know they were going to win, doesn't really sound like Nathan. Okay, it doesn’t sound like Nathan even if they were going to win for sure.

For that brief moment when I thought maybe Dani had put him up to it to “help the business" I wondered. But I shake my head, confused. "Nathan would do this to help our business anyway, though, right? Have you said anything to him lately about business being slow or the bakery not doing well?"

I swear to God, if someone did this to try to help me out, I'm going to scream.

I've been swamped, and I'm thrilled with that, obviously. I need to pay my dad back. That is going to nag at me until I get it done. I want to just own the bakery flat out. I want that to be mine. I don't want to go down to the bakery every single day and think about how it was paid for with guilt money.
