What about Alexsei and Cam?

I can't help the thought that goes through my head.

They feel different, too.

I'm not sure that Alexsei is all that much more grown-up than any of the other guys I've dated, but he makes me feel different. Special. He pays attention to me. He makes me feel amazing in a way no other guy has.

And what about Cam?

I could chalk Cam up to just being a necessary evil. It's clear that if I get involved with Alexsei, Cam comes along with that. I don't know how, exactly, that will work. I don't know if Cam is going to be there all the time or what, but I don't think I'd mind if he was. Yes, we fight. He pushes my buttons. And I find it exhilarating.

But now, looking across the table at Owen, I feel something else. It's like I can breathe easier when he's around. He's steady. He clearly has his shit together, and that is so fucking attractive.

And worth finding the time to fit into my life.

"What are you thinking about?" He asks me and I realize he's been watching me this whole time, as all of these thoughts have spun through my mind.

"Just that if this is dad energy or something, it's really working for me," I tell him, honestly.

Again, something I can't quite place just flickered through his gaze.

Then he asks, "Dad energy?"

"I just feel good around you. Safe. Like I don't have to worry about anything."

He nods. "That's true. I will take care of you, Luna."

I bite back the Oh, I bet you will that I almost say out loud. That would not be mature.

But I believe him. "I like that," I tell him.

"Good," he says simply. Then he looks down at my plate. "Eat. Everything is delicious." Then he looks back at me. "But I am hoping maybe we can go somewhere else for dessert."

"I happen to know the owner of the best bakery in the city."

"Are you asking me back to your place for some cake?" he asks.

And I like him so much more in that moment. Because that wasn't exactly mature, but he delivered it perfectly.

I laugh. "Yes, Owen I am."

CHAPTER 16

Owen

An hour later, I stand behind Luna as she unlocks the bakery. She has two locks and a security keypad.

"I like how much security there is here," I tell her.

She laughs lightly as she pushes the door open.

I step in behind her and shut the door, turning to relock it.

She sets her purse and keys on one of the little bistro tables.

"Let me guess," I say. "You're thinking that was a very ‘dad’ thing to say."

She gives me a smile. "Maybe."
