Chapter Sixty-Two

Utah

“Riley has some concerns, so he’s not willing to sign off on your probation completion until you give your report.”

Her hands shook as they stood outside the conference room, and Liam gently stroked her arm.

“Hey, he’s just posturing and letting everyone know how big his dick is. Don’t worry about it. I promise, little bee, it will be fine.”

No, it won’t. Nothing will ever be fine again.

She felt like bursting into tears.

“Let’s just get this over with.”

The first person Utah noticed when she walked into the room was Vicki Kaiser. The woman’s eyes widened with recognition, and she looked between Liam and Utah when she said, “I didn’t realize we’d already met.”

Vicki focused her attention squarely on Liam when she said, “We’ll need to have another discussion about that later.”

Liam introduced Utah to the board and highlighted all she’d accomplished during her brief tenure at the hospital, then said, “But you don’t want to hear from me. I’ll let Ms. Douglas go over her final report with you.”

His expression was so tender when he looked over at her, she felt like she was going to puke and looked for the nearest garbage can, just in case.

She had no idea how to even begin and stood in uncomfortable silence as she mentally prepared what to say.

Finally, Riley broke the silence.

“Did I understand correctly, Ms. Douglas, that you’ve amended your report?”

There was a low murmur among the group and Liam spoke up, his brows furrowed.

“You amended your report?”

A single tear escaped the corner of her eye as she nodded her head yes.

Liam whirled around and looked at Riley, his eyes narrow. “And why were you aware of this when the rest of us weren’t?”

Riley face was smug when he fired back, “You mean, why did your lover tell me instead of you? Probably because she didn’t know how to tell you, so she sought my counsel yesterday at the hospital.”

Liam’s voice was a low snarl. “What did you say to her?”

“I simply encouraged her to tell the truth. Please proceed, Ms. Douglas.”

As the words came out of her mouth, she felt like it was someone else uttering them. The hurt look on Liam’s face when she said she’d lied and manipulated him tore her heart out.

“So, you’re saying everything you did over the last four months—repairing the vulnerabilities, uncovering the embezzlement, were things you did? You created the problems with the system, then solved them?”

She nodded.

“I just have one question… why?”

“I—”

“She obviously was trying to earn your trust,” Riley interjected.

Liam ignored the man and kept hammering at Utah.

“So why didn’t you wait a few hours before reporting the embezzlement on Thanksgiving Day? You could have waited until you’d moved the money so it was unrecoverable, but you made sure the transaction could be reversed. Again, I have to ask, Ms. Douglas. Why?”
