The elevator stopped on the next floor, and Riley stepped out.

“Really think about what I said,” he urged as the doors closed.

She bent over at the waist to try and keep herself from hyperventilating.

If she went before the board and said she’d lied and orchestrated the whole thing, what would Liam think of her? Tears streamed down her face at the thought.

Still, she knew what she had to do. Riley was right, a few years of prison time was a small price to pay for Liam’s life. At least they had one more night together.

Chapter Sixty-One

Liam

He walked in to find the house lit with nothing but candles and Utah wearing nothing but a white negligee.

Sitting his briefcase down, he turned to her with a smile.

“What’s all this, baby?”

She wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face against his chest, whispering, “I just wanted to do something special tonight.”

“What the occasion?”

“No occasion, I just wanted to show you how much I appreciate everything you’ve done for me over the last four months.”

“That’s really sweet, little bee. You’ve done just as much for me.”

Her voice was small when she replied, “I’m glad you think that.”

She was obviously in need of a gentle hand tonight, so he cupped her face and looked into her eyes before capturing her mouth with his.

A soft whimper escaped her, and she wound her arms around his neck, holding him tight.

He felt the tears on her cheek, and he broke the kiss.

“What’s wrong, honey?”

She shook her head. “Nothing. I’m just feeling a lot of emotions right now.”

He knew the feeling. He wanted to say so much more to comfort her, but opted for, “I know, sweetheart. Come on, let’s go upstairs and see if I can make you feel better.”

As he made love to her, her emotions were all over the place.

She tried using her body to convey how much he meant to her. As she arched against him, and his arms slid around her when they came at the same time, it felt like she accomplished that.

“I love you, baby.”

“I love you, too.”

“Don’t leave me, okay?”

She wiped away her tears, then nuzzled against him without replying.

If only it were that easy.
