“I didn’t ask him to come; he’s working.”

“When do I get to meet him?”

“I’ll take you to introduce you to him after we check in on Dad.”

“Is he a doctor, too?”

“No, he’s the hospital’s CEO.”

“No shit?”

“Yeah. And, um, one more thing. I work at the hospital, now, too, and you’re the first to hear it, so don’t say I never tell you anything.”

Utah could feel her brother’s stare but kept her eyes on the road. Finally, he said, “It sounds like we have some catching up to do. Let’s grab a quick bite before we go to the hospital.”

Since her felony had been reduced to a misdemeanor, she opted to leave out the part about her arrest when she told her brother the PG-version of what she’d been up to the last six months.

“What about you?” she asked. “What’s new in your life?”

“Nothing really. Still love my job and still playing the field.”

“Hasn’t that gotten old? I mean, I was over it even before I met Liam, and you’re five years older than me. Aren’t you ready to settle down?”

“Nope.”

“You don’t want to be forty when you have your first kid, do you?”

“Well, since I’m not having kids, I’m not worried about that.”

She shook her head. “You sound like someone else I know. You may surprise yourself and change your mind someday.”

“Who? Who do I sound like?”

“Liam.”

“Your boyfriend? He doesn’t want kids?”

“He used to say he wasn’t going to have any.”

“Used to? I’m assuming you helped him change his mind?”

“I hope so.”

Phoenix’s eyebrows shot to his hairline. “Why? Are you pregnant?”

“What? No! But I want to get pregnant within the year, and he volunteered for the job. He said I have to marry him first, though.”

“He did, did he? Well, I look forward to meeting your future husband and baby daddy.”

Their mother teared up the minute Phoenix walked in the room, and she flung her arms around her oldest son’s neck.

Utah’s phone buzzed with an incoming text from Dakota.

Dakota: I’m going to head home.
