What the hell have you done, little honeybee?

He grabbed his car keys, intending to drive to her apartment and demand answers since she wasn’t answering his texts.

Slamming the driver’s door shut, his finger hovered over the start button. But before pressing it, his shoulders slumped, and he dropped his hand with a defeated sigh. He needed to calm the fuck down.

She was probably busy getting ready for her trip and just hadn’t noticed his texts. The last thing he should do is show up at her place like a jealous boyfriend or crazy stalker.

He was much more subdued when he got out of his car than he was when he got in.

Phoebe greeted him like he’d been gone for hours instead of minutes.

“Sorry, sweetie. It’s just me.” Undeterred, his dog wagged her tail in response. He leaned down and scratched her ears. “Don’t worry, girl. We’re going to get her back.”

Although, he wasn’t sure why he’d even want her back. She obviously didn’t want to be there.

He tossed and turned all night, trying to figure out what happened between her donning him schmoopy and when he got home.

Had he scared her off with talk of playing with her toys?

It hadn’t felt like it. He’d been with partners who weren’t into kinky sex, and he’d always been able to pick up on their hesitancy and would immediately back off.

But Utah had given him the exact opposite vibes. That’s why he’d thought maybe he’d met his match.

Had he read her all wrong?

He picked his phone up off the nightstand and glanced at it for what felt the millionth time to see that she still hadn’t read his messages.

He’d entered her contact information under the name Honeybee.

Had she blocked him?

None of this made any sense.

He wanted answers, dammit.

He fired off one more text to her.

Liam: Imagine my shock to come home and find you gone. You couldn’t even wait to tell me goodbye in person? Did I do something to upset you? If I did, please know that was never my intention. Please talk to me and tell me what I did wrong.

Now he waited.

Chapter Seventeen

Utah

“When did your apartment complex get cameras?” Amy asked when she walked through Utah’s door and dropped the stack of flattened boxes and packing paper she had in her hands and pulled out a red tape dispenser from her purse.

“I don’t know, but they’re good,” Utah replied as she grabbed a piece of cardboard from the stack and started assembling it. “You could see me with Phoebe clear as day both times I snuck her in here. The manager said she could have overlooked one infraction, but two ‘showed a pattern’. She didn’t care when I explained Phoebe was a foster and Liam was her new owner, so it wouldn’t happen again.”

Amy ran packing tape down the seam of the box Utah had assembled. “Damn, they’re gangsta about this no pets thing.”

“I mean, I was probably going to break my lease anyway, but I wanted a little time to find something new.”

“It worked out in the end. Now you can hide out and not pay rent for something you’re not living in anyway.”

Utah had called Amy after she left Liam’s and explained everything. And in true best friend form, Amy had offered to let her stay at her parents’ cottage on Plum Island free of charge.
