When Utah had insisted on paying, Amy reasoned it would be better if there wasn’t a paper trail connecting Utah to her whereabouts.

She’d countered with, “I can pay cash.”

“Yeah, we’ll figure something out,” was her BFF’s response. Which, being the youngest of four, Utah knew all too well meant they wouldn’t be figuring anything out, and she was going to have to find another way to get the cash to her parents.

Not that Amy’s parents needed it, but it was the principle of the matter.

Then Utah came home, found the eviction notice telling her she had two days to vacate the premises. She went to the front office to plead a case of mistaken identity only to be confronted with the video evidence against her.

She thought about calling Dakota to help her pack, since her sister was the one who’d technically gotten her into this mess, but in the end she called Amy again. And now here they were putting boxes together to pack all her belongings.

“I think we should be able to get everything boxed tonight and then I’ll find a storage unit tomorrow.”

“My storage unit is more than half empty,” Amy told her. “I’ve slowly been emptying it since I moved in with Chad. Just clearly mark your boxes with your name and we’ll put everything in there.”

“I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Fortunately, you’ll never have to find out. Now, tell me all about Mr. Sexy Hospital CEO and his cocker spaniel.”

Utah paused wrapping her kitchen plates in brown packing paper. Thinking about Liam and Phoebe made her tear up.

With a sad smile, she brushed the tears away and moved the plates she’d wrapped into a box on the counter.

“He was wonderful. I feel terrible for leaving like I did.”

Amy looked at her with narrowed eyes. “Wonderful? In all the years I’ve known you, you’ve never described anyone as wonderful.”

Utah shrugged. “There’s really no other way to describe him. He adopted this cocker spaniel that he probably shouldn’t have because he works all the time. But instead of reneging, he went and hired a dog walker and a contractor to install a doggy door and fence a smaller area of his yard for her. And he’s funny and kind…”

“And hot and has a big dick that he knows how to use…” Amy added with a smirk as she wrapped a bowl.

“Well, yeah,” Utah conceded. “That didn’t hurt.”

“And there’s no way you think it can work? I mean, it sounded like you two really hit it off. Don’t you think you could find a way to be together?”

“Well, let’s see… He’s the CEO of the hospital I just hacked and wiped-out tens of millions of dollars owed them. And because of my hack, his job may be in jeopardy… so I’m going to go with a big fat no on that one.”

“I guess when you put it like that. I just would love to see you find someone who makes you happy. And you sounded so happy every time I talked to you when you were at his house.”

“I’m happy at Disneyworld, too. Doesn’t mean I’m gonna stay there forever.”

That’s what she’d been telling herself since she made the decision to leave Liam’s house.

“That’s not the same,” Amy pointed out.

“I hacked his business, Aim. I lied to him. That isn’t exactly relationship foundation material.”

“But don’t you think—”

Utah cut her off. “We had a fun fling but that’s all it was. A fling, and it’s over now. Period. The end.”

A fling she’d think about until the day she died, but she kept that to herself.

Chapter Eighteen

Liam

She finally read his message on Thursday—two days after she’d left his house without even bothering to tell him goodbye in person.
