“Are you hungry?”

Her eyes lit up. “I’m starving.”

“Any requests?” he asked as he pushed the start button.

“I would kill for a cheeseburger and chocolate shake.”

He chuckled as he put the car into drive. “One cheeseburger and chocolate shake coming up.”

Liam could feel her eyes on him as he pulled into traffic. The air was thick with unspoken questions, but neither said anything as they drove, until finally, she asked, “After we eat, can we go pick up my car? I’m assuming it’s still at the Market Basket on Plum Island where I was arrested. Hopefully someone took the groceries I’d bought. I hate to think of that food going to waste.”

“They arrested you after you’d bought groceries? That was a dick move.”

“I said the same thing!”

“Well, I had your car brought to my house. There weren’t any groceries in it.”

“You did that?”

He briefly glanced over to find her staring at him, her head tilted.

“Of course. And your friend, Amy, brought your things from her parents’ cottage yesterday.”

“You met Amy?”

“I talked to her on the phone. Cindy was at the house and let her in. I’m sorry you got evicted, by the way. I feel somewhat responsible. I should have waited in the car with Phoebe instead of coming in.”

Utah shrugged. “It’s my fault that I didn’t pay attention to my surroundings. If I’d have noticed they’d put cameras in, I could have taken care of it.”

“Oh yeah? How?”

She shot him a look, then glanced down at her lap and quietly murmured, “You know how.”

“You’re that good that you can just wipe out camera footage you don’t want seen?”

There was a long pause before she replied, “Yeah, I am.”

He kind of loved her confidence. It was sexy as fuck.

They pulled into the parking lot of the ice cream parlor they’d gone to when she’d stayed with him.

Her face lit up with a smile. “I love this place.”

Liam couldn’t help but return her smile. “I remember.”

They got out of the car, and he reached for her hand as they walked toward the entrance. As he pulled the door open, she asked, “Why are you being so nice to me?”

He released her hand and gestured for her to go in first. They walked toward the counter, standing a few feet back while they decided what to order.

“Am I being nicer than I was before?”

She reviewed the overhead menu before replying, “No. You were very kind to me.”

“And yet, you still ghosted me.”

“I already explained why.”

“You’re right, you did.”
